Still defending their selection of a rich guy's son-in-law as Mr. Amigo 2018 members of the organization have defended the selection in the face of widespread disapproval in social media.
Commenter after commenter has voiced disapproval of Mr. Amigo Association's selection of Arturo Elias Ayub, the son-in-law of Carlos Slim, Mexico's richest man – and seventh richest in the world – to make an appearance during the upcoming Charro Day's events.
The mission of the MAA is "To celebrate the shared culture, friendship and family of Brownsville and Matamoros. To enjoy the traditions and history that unite us bringing “The Valley” and “La Frontera” closer together, serving as an example for our two countries."
In the past, the list of Mr. Amigos ranges from the president of Mexico to various actors, comedians, and performers. The past board have had members associated with Televisa, which resulted in soap opera stars and performers under contract with that broadcaster being chosen for the honor.
However, member Arturo Treviño, of "Los Trevis" convenience stores on both sides of the river, is said to have used his influence to convince the membership to extend the invitation to Ayub as a way to foster "economic development" and attract investment to the area, a purpose which differs slightly from their stated mission.
The Mr. Amigo Association's membership is rather clubby, with members inviting each other to join the association.

Won’t be walking downtown this year to photograph/film the Charro Days International Parade. Always enjoyed the local groups from both sides of the Border, the Classic Cars, Los conjunto nortenos, once even a group from S.L.P, even Senator Cornyn appeared, and above all the actresses and actors from Mexico. But Carlos Slim’s son-in-law.!? De ninguna manera. Equivalent to tRump sending Jared Kushner. I’ll pass.
Charro days is dying and most people in Brownsville go to McAllen or Hidalgo for their festivals. The charro days parades are lacking everything and not like the good old days of the 40's 50's 60's and 70's.

Here is what Mr. Amigo is really doing. They are using this position for political influence and loans for themselves. They are not about the people but about the whos who in Brownsville, TX and Matamoros,MX. It is not or will never be about you and I, and definitely not about he children of Brownsville,TX.
Arturo Trevinio needs a loan to survive his business, so he is hoping for a loan or partnership for his business in Brownsville,TX and Matamoros. If not a direct investment, he is hoping to get at least bankers names that this man knows or his father in law Carlos Slim. As rich as Carlos Slim is, he may own a few banks in Mexico.
Ralph Cowen is hoping that this man invests in Brownsville,TX but most importantly in the Port of Brownville where Ralph owns warehouses that are over 80 years old. He is hoping to have this man buy merchandise from his nephew John Cowen so they could be the Richest Powerful family in Brownsville,TX.
Tito Mata wants this man to invest in a Gym for the children.Wink Wink. He will charge the city and BISD for the usage of the gym and wants this man to buy the building, the weights and invest for Tito to go to all the competions in the USA and Mexico. Tito is trying to sell the idea of a Golds Gym in Mexico with him as the CEO, so he could get tons of young women admiring him and the men wishing they were Tito.
The rest of Mr. Amigo board just want this year to be over so they could be the next President and their turn to reach deep in the tax payers pocket and hopefully invite a Mr. Amigo they could financially benefit from.
