WHAT'S REALLY BEHIND THE BISD BOUNDARIES EXPANSION?

By Juan Montoya

Remember the hare-brained suggestion by Texas Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. to consolidate all of the school districts in Cameron County into one governed by the largest one, the Brownsville Independent School District?

Image result for sen. eddie lucio jr., rrunrrunThat idea, once county districts got wind of it, sank like a lead balloon and Eddie ran for cover blaming one of his staff members for introducing it "prematurely."

Now Lucio is backpedaling again after the BISD passed a resolution asking that the BISD boundaries be expanded to conform with the city limits of Brownsville. The board asked that Lusio and new District 37 State Rep. Alex Dominguez push the bill thriugh the Senate and House this legislative session.

The first to complain was the Los Fresnos ISD who said that at least three of its schools would be inside the Brownville city limits and they didn't like it.

Now it's the San Benito ISD which is giving the idea a thumbs down.

Lucio, as he is wont to do, has now come out defending the Los Fresnos ISD and saying the issue should be "studied" more closely before any bills are introduced.

But the move north, say some political watchers and Anti-LNG advocates, is that if the other part of the BISD expansion plan – the area of Cameron County south of the Port of Brownsville channel up to the Gulf of Mexico – is approved, it opens up the debate of tax abatements for those companies. At least one, Anova, has a lease agreement with the port for land south of the channel.

Port Isabel ISD, the towns of Laguna Vista and South Padre Island and other taxing entities and districts there, have turned down proposals and passed resolutions against the tax abatements for those companies. Virtually all of the Port of Brownsville and the land south of the channel falls within the boundaries of the Point Isabel ISD.

But if even this small part of the school district realingnment goes through, it will be up to the BISD, not the PI ISD to decide whether it will grant Anova the abatements it so dearly would love to have.

We're not talking peanuts here. Those abatements could mean millions of dollars in taxes to these companies, and a heft contribution to our state senator.

And as we have come to know him and Lucio III so well, they will hold their noses to stave off the stench to deposit their checks in their contribution accounts.

Its all about money...and BISD wants more money. BISD is a terrible school district and because so many students are leaving to charter schools and so many are from Mexico and pay no taxes, BISD seeks to go where the money is. Those people north of Alton Gloor want to be in Los Fresnos School District...better education and better school board. This plan is all about money for BISD.

Poison the kids with LNG, but fight over who gets the blood money. Port Isabel is bearing the brunt and the risks, with their school near a plant that could explode the way others have. LNG should pay top dollar for leasing this land and Port I should get the funds.

I wonder what would happen if those shady people at IDEA would open one of their scam school/factories in Los Fresnos? Everybody would start complaining that Los Fresnos is a bad district and line up to have their children educated in the IDEA factory.

Los Fresnos and Point ISabel are too small, they shouldn't exist

Port Isabel collects millions from most all port tenants Juan. They are one of the richest school districts in Texas, thanks to our stupidity.
This isn’t about LNG. It’s abt our kids.

Worse yet, all the millions they get from SPI condos an the port,
they must send to Austin for redistribution to poor Texas school districts like BISD.

The Sucios know this, which is why they want to do something about it.
Should have been done years ago

Fear mongers! You don't quit do you! Yes, it is about money! Point Isabel has been sending a check to the state for years because it is land rich and student numbers poor! Eddie Lucio should have turned some screws to get back the Shrimp Basin area for BISD to benefit from many years ago when the fleet was the largest in the world! Now they are going to get the LNG plants as well! BISD is a very good school district and well rated in the state! They take in special needs children that the charter schools don't! They do not discriminate! Chances are the complainer on this site was a piss poor parent that they themselves didn't amount to a hill of beans in life or they have or had children that are following the same foot steps as they did!

The port needs to go back to Brownsville ISD.

Better Brownsville then some small town in West Texas...that's what is happening now....all the funds go to PI and they have to give it away.....

This may be better for PI...maybe they'll now qualify for state funds.

BISD sucks, the school board sucks, the staff sucks and teachers suck. BISD is an out of control school district. The BISD women board is the worse in the STATE. cover ups is just part of the school board. Again, BISD sucks.

Eddie Lucio, Jr. leave Los Fresnos alone.

ask Philip Cowen! He ramrodded the chingaderas down Zendejas' throat and send her out to embarrass herself in front of the other superintendents. Why did he not go and face the music? Why did they postpone the Town Hall? Cause DR. Z would not be there to intelligently discuss the matter. And Eddie told me he would not get involved because it was TOO POLITICAL! Huh? Is he not to represent us as our elected representative - a politician!

The problem here is that we let the school admins spend money -- I think , and this crazy perhaps, that we should ban school admins from spending money without taxpayers' approval.

BISD has been using obsolete software such as eduguide and Edgenuity. Nobody uses it and yet we pay thousands upon thousands

Eddie Lucio III and corrupt LNG shenanigans over $$ again huh.

Lucio III's district is Harlingen, not BISD or SPI or the Port Isabel school districts.
You always hear about him and LNG or pipelines. Now getting himself involved in the LNG and Port Isabel school district money. Creep aint no democrat, but a fossil fuel republican.

Good ol Lucio up to his old tricks. Brownsville just keeps voting these "Bozos" into office....Lucio - SUCIO.

Hoping the end of straight ticket voting means fresh blood can topple these corrupt LNG stooges like the SUCIOS

Lucio is no democrat. He should run in the Republican primary. Even our Republicans don't hang neon FOR SALE signs around their necks to the LNG and PIPELINE interests like the LUCIOS.

Trump sure aint doing you Republicans no favors though. The longer he stays in office the more you suffer, like Cascos. I would think the GOP would be the loudest voices demanding impeachment, to save your own hides.

All it is money inside the pockets of the Daddy Lucio and his "intern thief," son, lil Lucio!

Just like the money that daddy lucio took when the supposed rail/truck bridge was in the works when Busteiro was alive!
