Ode to Belize, by Jerry Mchale

For months now our fellow blogger Jerry Mchale  (AKA Dr. G.F. Mchale-Scully, El Macho Gabacho, etc.), has been unmerciful to City of Brownsville At-Large 'A" Commissioner Cesar de Leon.

He has painted him as a flaming racist because of his use of the "N" word in a tape that was secretly recorded by former fire chief Carlos Elizondo. Elizondo was fighting to keep the city commission from releasing an audit showing that he and his assistant had steered patient transfers  to a private ambulance company with which the audit claimed he had a personal interest.

De Leon - an attorney - apologized publicly for his use of the word twice in the more than the half-hour recording and said that two black assistant Cameron County D.A.s were adamant than most about  throwing the book at his Hispanic clients and rejected the customary plea bargain process in domestic violence cases. In one case, one of them rejected a plea bargain that had been reached with ne of his clients through another Asst. DA.

 The furor that ensued when the tape was made public by Elizondo caused a diversion from the fire apartment audit that nonetheless became the basis for an investigation that resulted in charges against him for allegedly stealing thousands from the firefighter's union while he was the group's treasurer.

His trial on that charge, and 10 others having to do with his alleged breach of computer security of the emergency system computers is scheduled to start this April.

The release of the tape  by Elizondo caused national outrage and drew calls for De Leon's resignation from the city commission which De Leon ultimately resisted until now.

Now, according to Mchale, De Leon, by all accounts a crackerjack attorney, has the votes to be appointed as the legal counsel to the Brownsville Public Utilities Board and he has engaged in a campaign through his blog to yell that the sky is falling. Is it true?

No one knows for sure and stranger things have happened. 

After all, the list of PUB legal counsel has included the likes of current Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, another Mchale whipping boy. But its instructive that before he retired from the Brownsville Independent School District and he was the protege of "Coach" Joe Rodriguez, Mchale turned a blind eye to the shenanigans of then-PUB legal counsel Eduardo (Pee-Wee to his friends) Rodriguez, Joe's brother.

This is the way things work. If you have the votes, you get appointed. If you don't you don't. Not content with having De Leon leave the commission, Mchale now wants to blacklist him from other employment in his profession. Let's remember that Jerry was almost fired from the BISD for blasting a former BISD AD and was facing termination until Rodriguez came to his aid.

But to denounce someone for using the "N" word in a private setting (in a ranch with three people present) when you purposely use it in a published work that you hope will be disseminated far and wide to gain notoriety is a bit hypocritical, isn't it? In his latest postings, he has paired images of KKK in a hood with a picture of the commissioner and the Rev. Marin Luther King denouncing De Leon for using the word.

Neither Elizondo nor Jerry seem to care that their selective indignation has collateral damage, the image of this city. As long as they are not smeared themselves, it, apparently, is acceptable to them.

When Jerry wrote the poem above, his friends told him that his use of the word was inappropriate, and he would respond "me vale madre, mano."

Does intellectual honesty have a place in Jerry's work? Or is he shielded by a double standard where it is acceptable for him to publish the offending word openly while lashing others for using it, even if it was in a private setting?
