NOW THAT NEW SUPER WILL GET $350,000, OTHERS LINE UP

By Juan Montoya
The news that the board of trustees of the Brownsville Independent School District has set the salary of the new as-yet-to-be selected superintendent st $350,000 a year - a $45,000 increase over the $305,000 paid annually to former superintendent Esperanza Zendejas - has spurred a feeding frenzy for raises.

The board, which is in the budget process to set salaries of administrators, classified and non classified staff, support staff and legal counsel  for the new school year by October, will surely be asked to hike the salaries of many high-end BISD employees.

One of those who will surely come before the board will be board general counsel Baltazar Salazar. When Zendejas negotiated her incremental salary over the 2016 to 2019 school years from $275,000 to an eventual $305,000, Salazar was able to convince a former board that he couldn't possibly make ends meet on the paltry $240,000 ($20,000 x 12) he was getting.

The board - many of who received campaign contributions from Salazar - proved pliant and now he is raking in $288,000, second only to the superintendent. With the new superintendent to start at $350,000 it stands to reason he will want a bump upward.

So, in fact, will the cadre of administrators in the bloated district.

There are seven Assistant Superintendents each making $100,000-plus as do the staff attorney and CFO. And some trustees have expressed the opinion in open meetings that - given the declining enrollments that have led to the closing of three elementary schools, loss of upper-class students to charter schools, and a dangerously-low level of reserves - that perhaps the budget should include cuts in high-dollar administrative positions.

BISD enrollment has fallen from 49,111 in the 2010-2011 school year to 44,452 this year, a loss of 4,659 students. The projected enrollment for next year is 43,335. BISD planners say the city’s birth rate has fallen from 5,882 in 2003 to 4,912 in 2010 to 4,121 in 2017 accounting for part of the decline. But parent flight in favor of charter schools is also taking a big bite of the student count.

With fewer students, is there any need for all these assistant superintendents with their bloated salaries?, they ask. Ever since Terry Alarcon - one of the assistant superintendents - left for the Port Isabel ISD, there have been questions about the need to fill the position. And they point to numerous administrative positions that were created for some employees without any discernible purpose. In some cases the employees simply sit in their office waiting for the clock hands to reach 5 p.m.

Why is former BISD Athletic Director Tom Chavez working as a hall monitor at the BLA at his $100,000-plus salary pending his grievance, the same as when he was the cock of the walk in the halls of Rivera High School as its Head Football Coach?

And the Food and Nutrition Service Dept. is full of exiles from other departments who have run afoul with the administration and shunted off to the "hairnet" set.

BISD critics also  contend that the board should focus on raising the wages paid classified personnel, food service workers, teacher assistants, and other support staff.

"At the rate they have raised the salaries at the top it seems like they're out to bankrupt the district," said a district staffer close to the budget process. "Now that they know that the new super - whoever it may be - is going to get at least $350,000, maybe more, everybody is coming before the board with their hand out asking for a bigger piece of the pie."

The assistant superintendents do not get 3 months nor do the teachers.

Another idiot (7:42) who thinks teachers get three months off with pay. And yes, they are letting the students loose this week. I hope that’s what you’re trying to say. But then again you may not know the difference between losing and loosing. Is loosing really a word?

They do get three months. 2 months for summer, 2 weeks for Christmas. 1 week for Thanksgiving. And 1 week for spring break...PLUS all the other single day holidays and charro days. So yeah it’s MORE than 3 months...do the math. Or are you also a BISD teacher?

What hurts the idiot who keeps claiming his stupidity about 3 free months is that he or she has to keep their kid at home and finally do some real cooking for them and entertain them or find another baby-sitter for them. They eat breakfast, lunch and supper at BISD, regardless of what it is but it is better than the chips and cokes and helote con chile that they eat at home.

Have you also thought about the teachers not working an eight hour day? They spend a lot of their own time preparing and grading papers and doing stuff to modify the lesson to reach your kid, but what do you know. I bet you have never been to an Open House, or volunteered for anything with your child, but you sure do have a hard head in not understanding the concept of the 187 dat contract teachers sign for a base pay and have opted to take that base pay in 12 months so as to have a steady income. Or, they could go for the 9th month contract and apply for unemployment during the 3 months like so many do - those get money for nothing!!!! For real!!! Are you one of them? I bet!!!

Another idiot. Teachers only get paid for the days they work. It’s then divided into 12 months so they don’t have months of no pay or less pay because of summer, Christmas, or Charro Days. Don’t need to be a teacher to understand that, but you need to have a brain.

First off, I am not a teacher, nor do I work for BISD. I am a concerned citizen that pays taxes and votes.

To begin with, teachers sign contracts to work on average 186 days out of the year. This is not like the normal office or 9-5 type job. To complain about the time off they get, is not fair to them. Furthermore, the constant added paperwork, discipline problems, no administration help or even qualified administrators makes their jobs that much harder. These raised should be given to them, and all of the other employees on the outside of the glass house. All these employees are completely ignored. They should be rewarded for their hard work, and not looked over year after year. As like any other business or operation of this size, there will be employees that are good and bad. It is the management side that needs to address that.

Speaking of management, could we find another operation as messed up as the BISD. It seems like more than half have no training or knowledge of what they are supposed to be in charge of. The treatment of teachers and employees is a total disgrace. They will ask for their opinions and have them vote for items, but they won’t get what the majority wants. It’s just a show the top puts on to try and make the teachers and employees happy and involved. However, the decision has long been made before any of this happens. Employees and teachers should not have to feel retribution for speaking their mind, reporting what is wrong, doing what is right or just plain doing their job correctly. All this comes from poor leadership and management skills.

BISD has set a trap for their next superintendent. The $350K salary is an enticement for sure...not only for well qualified people, but also for unqualified people attracted by the salary. The trap is that BISD expects the next "super" to be able to turn chicken shit into chicken salad. BISD is a corrupt and poorly functioning system that produces "uneducated" graduates that really don't benefit the needs of this community. That's why the charter schools are attracting the most qualified students and leaving BISD to educate Matamoros. The community needs a better academic system, not just day care and feeding.

Anonymous said...

The no longer have students to fill up those schools and they want a raise??? mamones

Anonymous said...

Idea schools are also flooded by Mata kids. As a matter of fact, I spoke to an idea parent today about it. What they need to do is rezone so that other districts dont benefit from Brownsville resident taxes.Like Los Fresnos District benefiting from San Benito, Brownsville, and Portisabel

What we really need is to stop paying taxes to BISD and the port stop the runaway corruption and the idea that they answer to no one.

BISD has a bunch of very rude teachers can't stand any criticism they think their shit don't stink

Anonymous said...

Are they going to write to the racist republican to kick out all the illegals? They might get an additional month off with pay

Anonymous said...

Teachers are citizens, pay taxes, and vote. So I dont see your point in degrading and insulting the very people you send your kids to school to be taught by. Are you passing on your vomit-inducing attitude toward teachers to your kids? If you are, no wonder nothings kids go to school and learn nothing, with that attitude.

All your foul-mouthed comments are evidence of the kind of education your children are receiving at home. All you highly sophisticated people judging teachers, you obviously have excellent ones.
