ELECTION TURNOUT TAKES A DIP IN SWELTERING SATURDAY

By Juan Montoya

Despite a disappointing early voting turnout in the city of Brownsville elections Saturday of only 523 voters across the six voting sites in the city, the turnout in the runoffs is 340 votes higher than it was in the May 4 early voting period.

During the first round of elections 5,300 votes were cast during the first six days of early voting compared to 5,640 in as many days during these runoffs.

The turnout at the Central Library declined to 327, down considerably from the five previous days.

The story was the same at the Southmost Library, where only 90 voters showed up to cast their ballots despite the fact that the supporters of a slate of candidates (Rick Longoria, Charlie Cabler and Jessica Puente-Bradshaw) provided conjunto bands, food, and enlisted the help of former Dallas Cowboy Tony Casillas.

The lack of enthusiasm Saturday was probably best characterized by the one lone vote cast at the UTRGV La Sala polling station. The sweltering weather (in the mid-90s with a heat index soaring past the 100 degree mark) probably didn't help either.

Whether the festivities will spur the rest of the electorate in the last two days (Monday and Tuesday) and prep the turnout on election day next Saturday is anyone's guess.

In the May 4 regular elections there was a surge of voting that surprised some people. Statistically, some 60 to 70 percent of the votes are cast during the extended early period.

Voters will decide between Trey Mendez and Charlie Cabler for mayor, between Jessica Puente Bradshaw and John Cowen for At-Large "A", and between Nurith Galonsky and incumbent Ricardo Longoria for District 1.

Se gastaron miles de dolares pa' nada.

These buffoons thought they would get such a large crowd that would compensate the amount of time they've been sitting on their ass. With Tony Casillas there, electronic billboards, 5 bands, food, drinks, and FB lives every minute, the only thing that they accomplished was realizing that none of them has the support from their own people.

Such a looser slate, ni su mama los quiere.

The reason is simple: La Southmost no se vende. Este barrio no se vende. (those are the phrases that appeared in our neighborhood since Monday and approved by Ricardo Longoria).

So first Ricardo Longoria offends us. Next he makes a big party with free food and music and famous personalities !!!!

Ricardo Longoria forgot that Southmost is pura RAZA and they figured that:

Ricardo Longoria sold the Southmost barrio for 16 years.

What if you had a party and nobody came? Remember back when Bill Clinton came down to Campaign for Solomon Ortiz and only about 30 non-mandatory people showed up? Remember that it didn't do any good? Remember when Charlie Atkinson tried to run against a no-name write-in on the campaign of "How about them Cowboys"? Remember that he became "Charlie Who" after that?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, so not only is the Marin slate ineffective, they are also stupid and I daresay insane. BTW Juan, I really love the crowd scenes of the throngs of people who were not there. The only question is what abject moron thought this would be a good idea and work, and what morons were cheer-leading it after the decision was made? Michael Rdz continued to destroy any scrap of remaining political capital he might have had lending his name to this buffoonery. Charlie wasted a big chunk of his retirement income and nobody is going to supplement Rick's income ever again. Jessica? Nobody cares.
