CITY HEALTH: YOU NEED A PERMIT GO GIVE BOTTLED WATER

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

For years, the city has poured millions into the revival of the downtown district.

Sometimes these efforts have been self-serving and amounted to nothing more than real-estate speculation to benefit politicians' cronies. But some dedicated businessmen and women actually believe the city is committed to bettering the area and have invested their time - and more importantly, money - toward that effort.

But there is always that entrenched city bureaucracy to enforce its territory that hinder those efforts through its draconian edicts.

Take, for example, the upcoming Cyclobia this Friday. Those of our readers who have followed us on this subject know we are no fans of this costly exercise that shuts down city streets, taxes city staff and security, and provides a few hours of play are to cyclists. But be that as it may, it has been a major thrust of the city commission majority since commissioner Rose Gowen has been on board.

It seems that a local businessman (the Kraken Bar owner we know as Danny) is attempting to establish a pedicab service and thought he'd use the Cyclobia event to recruit drivers of the bike-like taxicabs to establish the service.

Toward that end, he was going to exhibit the pedicabs and hand out bottled water to the cyclists in front of his bar on Adams Street.

Well, the city employees in charge of organizing the Cyclobia events informed him that if he wants to give out bottles of water he must get a permit from the health department or else it's a no go.

Now, we can understand if Danny was preparing food or handing out perishables. But unopened bottled water?

He will doubtless comply to satisfy health code inspectors, but isn't it ludicrous that a permit is required to give (not sell) bottles of water to thirsty cyclists?

That is just one of the reasons that a new Health Director is needed. Art Rodriguez, has been a disaster since being the Health Director. It is time he is removed as the director. We need someone that at least have some common sense and knows how to run a department the right way. Mr. Doctor Rodriguez, is hated by his employees. Hopefully, this new administration will make big changes in the Health department.

What a great idea. Sometimes the city cannot just get out of the way of progess. I wish Danny all the best in this endeavor. His is the mindset we need downtown. This is so so cool.

The city of Brownsville wants to be like Austin, not going to happen. There is not enough money in Brownsville for the people to spend every weekend and enjoy the nightlife. There's nothing going on. That Douche Pizzeria with cheap wine gives you a headache, give you a a fake hangover get real. Go fix the drainage system, roads, trim the Palm trees , males the ringgold park look dead, repaint the lines in the street, powerwash city buildings sidewalk, hire somebody to wash and wax fire department trucks, no one who works for city should have car and phone allowance, or do as you please and do nothing. I go to Brownsville my home town once a year and i stay at the island.

Juan,

Then does that mean that all booths that set up at cyclobia need a permit? Then I want for all little league teams who sell water at the intersections to also have a permit. Finally, at all those 5k runs organized, I also want for them to have a permit! Pinches mamadas! Apply it to everyone! Art no sabe nada! He is opening a can of worms!

all about the money!

if the city needs money they need to pull all the car and cell phone allowances. buy those employees a bike and they can ride the bike trails to work or give them a BUS/ Metro allowance
that would save in gas maintenance insurance and lease payments!

e dicho!!!

When was the last time Art "La Marrana Negra" rode a bike? If he is a health director, you would think he would take better care of himself instead of looking like la marrana negra que nadie quiere?

Cylovias is just a waste of tax payers monies. Closure of downtown streets affects businesses, besides, very few people participate. There's probably more city employees incurring overtime pay than participants. Maintenance and repaintaing of bike lanes every few months is also a huge drain of city budgets. Does anyone in the city commission have any common sense and take appropriate action to stop this nonsense of needless expenditures?

cyclophobia bunch of nuts spending city tax monies.

Stay thirsty my friends! The city won't let you receive free water! I have no good words, but since a kid I was taught "La Agua No Se Niega."

Permit? what permit?

Does H.E.B. have a permit to sell bottled water in Browntown. Politicians hand out bottled water on election day. No wonder this city doesn't progress, the city officials seek their permission for everything. On the subject of bicycles, those asphalt "armadillos" downtown that are supposed to protect people on bicycles prevent the street sweepers from cleaning those streets. Since Rose Gowen and her "cycle-heads" put in those asphalt "armadillos", I have never seen a biker. Perhaps they only ride at night or are invisible? So, we shut down commerce so people can ride a bike downtown, despite those bike lanes. Why can't bikers peddle while the stores are open??

You can pee on the street but you can't give water away in a closed container que pendejos...
