CYNDI HINOJOSA; NO BACKROOM DEALS, STAYING IN JP RACE

By Juan Montoya

Saying that she would not be a party to "backroom deals," Cyndi Hinojosa, a candidate for Cameron County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, Place 1, said she will not consider being appointed as Cameron County District Clerk if current officeholder Eric Garza resigns to throw his hat in the ring for Cameron County Sheriff.

Hinojosa said a number of people had approached her and asked her if she would withdraw from the JP 2-1 race for the position now held by Linda Salazar. She and former federal law enforcement officer Fred Arias have filed for the position held for the last 16 years by Linda Salazar.

Salazar is called the "Cupid of the JPs" because she dedicates an inordinate amount of time soliciting couples to let her perform the wedding ceremony and charge them the $250 fee which JPs are allowed to keep by Texas law. At that rate, the amount generated through weddings is more than  double the $56,000 salary.

"I am not running to get a salary," she stated. "I am running because I feel that I can provide good, honest service to the residents of this county. I am not interested in any other office. Some people have told me not to run against poor Linda. But I'm not running against her. I'm running to give the people better service."

Hinojosa said she has found good support for her candidacy in the county and said she had held an organizational meeting attended by some 75 female supporters Thursday.

"I'm not going to accept any office other than the one I'm seeking," she said. "I have told my supporters that I feel I can provide fair, impartial judgments for the people in court and that's what I intend to do."

If Garza decides to run - and indications are that he will - he will ave to resign his position as district clerk. The commissioners would then have to appoint an interim county district clerk to replace him. Salazar's supporters apparently felt that dangling this carrot in front of her would persuade her to leave the race for JP.

But Hinojosa said she will have none of the intrigue.

"I want to be justice of the peace and that is where I'm going to stay," she said.

Does she think she can give better service and do even more weddings? She’s younger and prettier so she may be able to better market herself.
