(Ed.'s Note: Saturday kicked off the First annual Ancient Mexican Culture celebration in Brownsville's Market Square. City of Brownsville Commissioner Ben Neece opened the celebration with a ribbon cutting accompanied by the sound of the conch shell announcing the start of the festivities. The event included handmade crafts vendors, native performers and artists as well as academic presentations on Mexican Native life sciences and sports.
Unfortunately, headline author and speaker Miguel Leon-Portilla, who was to give a lecture on his boon Aztec Thought and Culture, died Oct. 1 in Mexico City.
The event which was held from 10 a,m. to 10 p.m. attracted visitors to downtown most of the day. The adults had a good time, and the kids had the run of the square.)

Why can't it just have been titled "Ancient Native American Stories of the Americas"? Most indigenous tribes migrated (or were forced from their homes) through colonization. Mexico in itself is still a very narrow view on indigenous people because of this migration.
Lastly: no such thing as a "first annual" for any event.

Mexican Culture? That event had nothing to do with Mexican Culture, a few vendors of fake Mexican artesanal trinkets and Dancers that their performance seemed more like Stilettos Dancers than Cultural Ballet
Excellent event. I especially enjoyed Dr. Tony Zavaleta's presentation and Mark Clark's artwork. Both were very informative. Although some misinformed people have said Mark "appropriates" culture, he actually knows more about the subject an is more sensitive to it than anybody else! We are lucky to have both of them.
