The gloves have come off.
If you thought that the race for the 2020 Democratic Party primary for Cameron County Sheriff was going to follow in the normal gentlemen's agreement tradition, think again.
Eric Garza, currently the Cameron County District Clerk, announced just last week that he will be challenging the 18-year incumbent Omar Lucio for sheriff. Lucio was first elected to office in 1997, lost a term, and then took over again in 2005. He has been in office since.
On the other hand, Garza has served one full term after being elected in 2014. He was then reelected in 2018 and is in the first year of a four-year term.
Garza will remain in office until the district judges appoints a replacement, but he has signaled that he isn't going to wait and has come out swinging.
In an attack ad that started airing today, he goes after Lucio for what he alleges is "wasteful" spending that results in the department going "consistently" over budget because of inept management, the cost of housing inmates outside the county at taxpayer expense, and a failed attempt to get a $30,000 pay raise.

In the ad, Lucio is depicted before the commissioners court lamely answering "I don't know" to questions on these issues.
Now, remember, we have a full five more months of campaigning before the primary, so it's only going to get hotter before it cools off. Attack ads are pricey endeavors. It's now or never for Garza and his ad bears witness that he knows this very well. Will Lucio engage?
If this is any indication of what awaits Lucio down the road, he may not have much of a choice in the matter. It'd either take a pummeling in television ads and social media or come out swinging himself. Does he still have the vigor to respond to this new challenge?

What ever happened to the investigation into theft at the district clerks office, did he just sweep it under the rug, What change can we possibly need if he can’t even handle the office he is currently . The guy is just an overpaid secretary, what experience can he possibly bring to the sheriffs office as a reserve officer . W hen has this guy ever patrolled the streets, investigated a crime or been out alone in the field in a struggle fighting for his life !!! Law enforcement is a profession not a hobby !!!! If we need "a good, honest cop" then we need someone other than Omar Lucio. He is a puppet for the Reyna Brothers and is suffering from dementia. We need a cop who can actually be a cop, not just a figurehead for the office. Time to elect a new sheriff and get rid of the corruption and political favoritism in the Lucio?Reyna administration. You dont need to be qualified or have "cop" experience to be the Sheriff it's not like he conducts traffic stops raids houses or patrols shit he doesn't even need to carry a gun. The captains and Lieutenants do the actual police work the sheriff is just a public figure who decides how to spend the budget. And if you have a dumb cop in charge of spending your screwd. You need a business man a nerd who is good with a pen and paper to run the place. Let the pre workout muscle heads dress in tight shirts for instagram and patrol the geek with the pen and paper can run the department in spending and management. Hopefully he gets elected and cleans house flush out the rats.

Yes, change needs to be done, but at this moment Eric Garza is not the right change the sheriff’s office needs. People need to stop and look at what these candidates bring to the table. Sheriff’s office needs a person who has experience in law enforcement. Just cause he went to the police academy and dresses up as a reserve doesn’t make him qualified. Commissioners court needs to assign someone in Eric’s office as interim soon! These guy is putting up signs on our tax payers money. Step down already Eric! And his ad is misleading. Sheriff Lucio did not ask for a raise, but you did Eric and it was rejected by commissioners, so now you decided to switch to one of the highest paid office.
