A Brownsville committee of 11 local leaders have announced Tuesday the four winners for the city’s Murals Without Borders contest.

The winners are “Un Mismo Corazon” by Marisa Latigo of Matamoros; “A Hop, Skip, and a Jump” by Marcelina Gonzales, a University of Texas at Brownsville graduate; “Liberty Lighting the World” by Robert Ruiz, a Brownsville native; and “Aguilas” by Santos Villarreal, a native of Matamoros.

The contest was opened city-wide Aug. 1 and provided artists with the opportunity to depict a world without borders to symbolize the unity of the Brownsville-Matamoros region and provide public art for the community.

Murals without borders, on one side, Brownsville with some type of law and order but our evil stepsister Matamoros has no morals, no law in order, no nothing but gangs running around Matamoros taking protection money from every business owner and families. The murals have only one thing in common, the paint! Nothing more! Just the ask the citizens of Matamoros, living in that town is like living in a mural of death.

Just how do these murals fit in with the Historic overlay of the city. What is their historical significance and why can't other property owners decorate their property with murals. The Historical overlay is managed by hypocrites and this is an example of "special" exceptions.

Spending money on dumb shit again… Great job all who are involved in this. So much more that can be done, especially downtown. Not sure who’s idea it was considering that there are so many variables that can come into play with this “art.”
