RENAMING OF FRONTON STREET LITMUS TEST FOR COMMISSION
1. Public Hearing and ACTION on Resolution Number 2019-092 to rename McNair Family Drive (from Palm Boulevard to Sam Perl Boulevard) to East Fronton Street. (City Manager’s Office) City of Brownsville Commission meeting agenda item Tuesday, Dec.3, 5:30 p.m.
By Juan Montoya
Will they or won't they?
So far, at least two City of Brownsville commissioners (District 1 Nurith Galonsky and District 4 Ben Neece) have committed themselves to support the renaming of East Fronton Street to its original name after a majority earlier this year voted to support its renaming to McNair Family Drive.
The renaming set off a flurry of activity in the neighborhood to return it to its original name under new rules introduced by new city manager Noel Bernal where the signatures of 75 percent of the residents are required to rename a street. Before that, all it took was a majority vote of the city commission.
With Neece and Galonsky making up two of the five of the full city commission supporting the residents, it will be highly enlightening to see how the rest - District 2 Jessica Tetreau-Kalifa, District 3 Joel Munguia, At-Large A John Gowen, At-Large B Rose Gowen, and, if a tie breaker is needed, Mayor Trey Mendez - will vote.
Will they support the residents and rename their historical street back to its former name, or will they cow under the pressure by the prominent Brownsville family and their acolytes?
Cowen has said in the past that he would vote on "fact-based" arguments. Is the fact that a majority wants to keep the original name factual enough?
Or will the old family (and socioeconomic) ties bind his vote to the McNairs? Or how about Gowen, who also claims historical exemption to her home and pays no city taxes on it just as the McNairs do with their "historical" warehouses on East Fronton?
Will her allegiance to the old, landed, families triumph over the will of the people?
Mungia, for that matter, is also on the line to see which way he goes on the vote. This could be the litmus test on whether this city commission adheres to the popular will or sides with the city's elite class.
We will see on Tuesday.

McNair is a douchebag. I hope to see him lose.
Cowen + McNair = Irish loyalty
Don't count on that loser's vote!!!!
If it comes to it, Mayor Mendez will vote with his Trey allegiance and disdain his Juan ancestry. Ese vato cree que no es Mejicano! Trey Mendez? WTF kind of name is that for a brown-skinned shorty? LOL
Pura cagada con este asunto, Senor Juan. Que le pasa a Bronsvil? Parece que estan tarugos a lo maximo.
VOTE NOW: Put Astros on first All-MLB Team
Will vote astros only if they can use their trash can, lights, whistles, laptops and cameras on center field...
Law firm said it had sued TPC claiming the blast damaged residents' properties and disrupted area businesses.
Officials worried if nearby storage tanks containing volatile butane and butadiene caught fire, they could lead to larger explosions endangering residents.
Elected officials and the city will be next to get sued. They should go personal and official capacity make them pay and not use the city insurance. That's the only way they'll learn.
People Are Leaving Texas By Any Means Necessary
GOOD BY GRINGOS!!! NO MORE LAND TO STEAL GUAYES.
In Browntown, the best damned name for that street would be: "Ya Te La Puedes Pichonear Boulevard"...
Leave the original name, Fronton should and must remain. By the way, make this greedy people pay their property taxes as everyone else. "Historical designations" should not be allowed for personal homes, these people should be setting the example and pay their fair share instead of taking advantage of a very weak system. Shame in you all.
LOL at 7:36am
Should have named it that, after they closed El Charro....
PAGEN LAS TAXAS PINCHE GUAYES
FRONTÓN WILL GET THE NAME BACK. STREET WILL BE CLOSED FOR A BIG PARTY.
Cuando? es el gran fandango? Paga las taxas pinche culero
The city should start naming the cross-walks with the local elitist names after they start paying taxes.
You idiotas wanted gringos YOU GOT EM no more services to the barrios, cops patrolling these areas, the bike gang dressed as you know who, giving out more tickets at selected areas, more taxes, all whites TAX exempt, voting places eliminated, city and county deliberately taking their time to process all programs for assistance, more designated historical properties to whites only, no more city and county services to ALL BARRIOS!!
"I AM GRINGO BUT PLEASE VOTE FOR ME I WILL HELP YOUR COMPADRES AND ALL THE BARRIOS WILL HAVE ALL CITY AND COUNTY SERVICES, 'I PROMESE' ".
MORE ICE RAIDS ON HISPANIC BUSINESSES, MORE BORDER PATROLS CHECK POINTS THE DA FORCING YOU TO WITHDRAW BLOOD AND DNA SAMPLES "WANT MORE"?
More hiring of whites at city hall and the county you can bet on that. I heard that there's a line of whites waiting to apply but only for director positions (with a GED).
