BISD, CHARROS, BAN CHARTER SCHOOL KIDS FROM PARADE; BISD, CHARRO DAYS INC.MUST RETHINK THIS DRASTIC MEASURE

By Juan Montoya

No sooner has the Brownsville Independent School District tried to diffuse scandal by appointing a former cop to the board than they ignite a fire storm by banning charter school children from the Charro Days student parade.

Yesterday, what's left of the BISD board unanimously appointed retired Brownsville Police Dept. officer Eddie Garcia to replace Erasmo Castro..

But the stunning turn of events on Charro Days children parade participation has led parents and community residents to wonder whether the new superintendent is totally out of touch with the Brownsville community. We are told that this drastic – and non-inclusive – measure was never approved by the board.

In a widely-circulated letter, the BISD and the Charro Days Fiesta organization informed charter schools like Jubilee Academies that "this year the decision has been made to not include charter schools to participate in this year's BISD Charro Days Parade scheduled for Thursday, February 27th from 2:30 to 4:40 p.m.."

"This year," the letter to the charter schools, says "in keeping with the intent and history of the original agreement, the district has decided not to include charter schools."

In response to inquiries on the reason for the banning of charter school children from the event, a BISD letter stated that "in order to better accommodate the many district campuses eligible to participate, it was decided to limit performances to BISD entities only."

Somewhere, somehow, someone decided that the district could banish children of the city from a  community wide fiesta. Curiously, no religious or Montessori schools were included in the ban. Why charters? Is it because they are in direct competition with the BISD for warm bodies? Should the city be an accomplice to this banishment of a section of the population which contributes through its taxes to the annual celebration?

"This notification saddens us as we know our students and families have truly enjoyed being part of this event," a letter to charter school parents states.

We agree. Unless the BISD and Charro Days Inc. want to start a firestorm, the children of these schools should be allowed to participate. Charro Days does not belong to the BISD or Charro Days Inc. It belongs to all of us, children of the charter schools included.

Small-minded, selfish shit. When I say, "All Mexicans march!," you march!!!! LOL

This is an extremely poor decision on the part of BISD. Charro Days children’s parade is about ALL children in all local schools. Shame on BISD.

Sadly, Charro Days does belong to Charro Days, Inc.

Stop faking news, Montoya.

Brownsville ISD should be renamed...The Brownsville/Matamoros/Illegal Alien ISD. I encourage parents to remove your children from this cesspool of a public school and educate them somewhere else.

GET OVER IT! It’s a BISD event. They have Friday and Saturday to participate. BISD schools rotate every 3 or 4 years. And the disgruntled former board member is using this to hate a district he once represented. Shame on him! This is the type of person we do not need to be in any office. Thank you BISD for looking out for the children in our district.

This speaks to the BISD leadership. Now we know it has none. Minerva Pena and the other "small-minded" shitheads should resign! Exclusion never is the answer. Work toward community, pendejos!

I am wondering, isn’t the Thursday Parade called the BISD children’s parade, doesn’t it mean that the participants should be BISD students. For years the private schools have participated with the BISD’s parade; now the charter schools want to bully their way into the parade and push out BISD’s students? Guess when it was one or two charters it was no big deal. Now that there are lots charter schools, guess BISD had to relook at the numbers for the parade.

No wonder people from foreign countries find it easy to come into this country and try to destroy all the American culture/values. What has this country come to!!! People please wake up, this country is great because we have laws, rules, policies, practices and great customs, that work for this entire country. How would anyone like for people, who are not living in their home, to go in and force unwanted changes/practices in their homes. Welcome to the harshness of 2020. Please everyone let’s get along and respect each other and abide by the needs, policies, practices and culture of this outstanding Nation.

A Note to charter schools: Get a WRITTEN agreement with the city, unite with the private schools ( Incarnate Word, St. Joseph, Guadalupe Regional, St. Luke, St, Mary's, Baptist HS, Episcopalian, Christian HS) have a Border Fest in a smaller scale that what Mcallen does, choose a date right AFTER state exams, get someone like Alex Fernandez ( Vicente's grand son) and you will attract young crowds; and if you succeed, BISD will "suddenly" decide to be friendly and call you back. You can respond that you are not interested and shut the door in their face like they have done to you.

Juan wow, really since when was BISD Appointed to head the parade and all? Wrong message, Guess the BISD Group cant stand the competition from charter schools who are eating their lunch. Its no secret parents will take their kids where there conditions are better and performance is excellent. As for charro days, in its heydays it was good but nowadays the younger generations really are not into this thing uness you are going to go party and get drunk and eat plain and simple. Perhaps it might be a good idea to start a boycott like in the old days UFW boycotted buying non union fruits and vegetables. Let just boycott charro days and sombero fest, as always only a few persons who really benefit from this event each year paid by the taxpayers of the city of brownsville and yes these folks know who they are and they dont care.

Anonymous said...

Could it be possible that they are trying to keep the parade within a determined amount of time? If that is the case then I can understand why they would limit the number of participants. Even if this is not the case, at the end of the day this event is put on by BISD. They should have the right to determine who participates. I am sure Jubilee or IDEA hold events in which the district does not participate. The tax payer argument is irrelevant We all pay taxes to South Texas ISD, yet they select who attends their district.

Eddie Garcia was a detective for a while, once he found out he was going to be moved back to patrol, he realized he could not hack it and wound up retiring. Why would the school board want someone who cant work when the heat turns up? Garcia was a "legend" in his OWN mind. Good riddance!

As a former educator in our community, I am appalled that the fools at BISD have blundered into yet another public relations fiasco.
The notion of banning children not enrolled at BISD smacks of closed minded, parochial thinking at its worst. It mirrors, quite accurately, the divisive nature of our nation's politics in its attempt to make a local celebration of regional diversity exclusionary.
I don't know what the Board's role in this decision was, but someone in Central Administration needs to pull their head out of whatever orifice they have it stuck in. This is a no brainer! Don't these people have enough problems to deal with? A Board mired in scandal with seats becoming revolving chairs as one member after another is discovered to have, at a minimum, exercised very poor judgement would seem to be too busy screwing up to find yet new laughably inane positions to take!

I just read one of the comments stating that charter schools want to bully themselves into being in the Charro day parade and pushing the Bisd Schools out. What an idiotic thought! I would like to think that as a city we want all the children of Brownsville to participate including charter schools, private schools and daycares. The only option that we have as residents of Brownsville is to vote out the so-called leadership that we have running the city and school board. This stupid decision by BISD cannot stand, and we have to do something about it. It's unfortunate that of all the POLITICOS running at this moment for office, none are speaking about or supporting the children of Charter Schools. Shame on all of you. Including Ruben Cortez who is running for state senate and is a member of the TEXAS BOARD OF EDUCATION.

BISD will be losing a lot of money. They charge charter schools $250 for each club joining the parade. I know with my campus alone BISD will be losing $5000 in parade entrance fees. With that said, maybe the charter schools should all rally together and start their own parade on Wednesday to kick off or on Sunday to end the festivities. BISD would charge us, then disregard our entry numbers and push us all the way to the end of the parade anyway. They were never courteous and if anyone fouled up and let a charter school go sooner than planned they would stop the school and push others by them until they were back at the end again. Let them be prideful. BISD is already suffering academically why not let them suffer morally. Their students are learning from the best examples and that is why they won’t succeed like they should be. In the end, they are only worsening their reputation. Maybe now since the illuminated parade is sponsored by IDEA, a charter school, maybe IDEA should ban BISD from that parade.
