Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Sources who wish to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to disclose this information have confirmed that this year's selection for Mr. Amigo in none other than champion boxer Julio Cesar Chavez.

If this is true – and the official announcement is for noon today –and after the controversy that erupted over last year's choice of Arturo Elias Ayub, son-in-law of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, this year's choice will go a long way to reconcile the organization with the citizens of Brownsville.

The Mr. Amigo Association mission statement is to "promote the international friendship and goodwill which has long existed between the United States of America and the Republic of Mexico as noted on international endeavors of culture, commerce, entertainment and other meaningful bi-national dialogue, all of which profess the mutual love and respect between its people.

"Hence, the Mr. Amigo Association honors annually a distinguished Mexican citizen whose life work embodies those very human qualities and is honored and recognized with the Mr. Amigo bronze plaque and other expressions of friendship."

Chavez is the best-known Mexican boxer in recent history. He is known as the greatest boxer from Mexico. He is known for winning the world championship title six times in three different weight categories during his career of 25 years.

He was born in Sonora, Mexico, on July 12, 1962. Chavez’s father, Rodolfo Chavez, used to work for the railroad and Chavez, along with his nine siblings (four brothers and five sisters), grew up in an abandoned railroad car. He was from a poor family and as a child, he saw his mother wash and iron clothes in order to earn money.

Chavez took up boxing in order to earn money to bring his family out of poverty. He began as an amateur boxer at the age of 16, shortly before moving to Culiacan to pursue his dream to become a professional boxer.

He also holds record for successfully defending the world title more times than any other titleholder, for most number of title fight wins, the most number of title fights, and he had the longest winning streak of any boxer at about 13 years.

We have been critics of the MAA for some time because of their choices of Televisa movie and novela stars. And last year's choice left much to be desired. But if it's true, president Artemio Chavez, president-elect Juan Rogelio Chapa, treasurer Graciela Salas, and secretary Martha de la Garza – the MAA directors – deserve plaudits for their choice of this immensely popular Mexican citizen.

Juan I thank you for always give first hand information, I don’t agree with you. Sure he was a great boxer but also he was and is a drug addict and this addiction fueled by his contacts and friends in el cartel de Sinaloa and he has not regrets saying it at all. You ask him and the guy doesn’t have any remorse, Montoya do you see the news? Mexico is controlled by this cartels that he befriends, this cartels kill thousands of innocent people every day!! And Mr. Amigo is giving him the award? What is wrong with the board? I will like to see if The Lucios, Vela, Trevino, and the Mayor signing a proclamation to this guy. I will like to see CBP closing the bridge to this guy and the last laugh will be The Brownsville Police Department taking care of him. Yes better than last year, but he doesn’t deserve the MAA award.

Not only does Trump's stupidity rub off but also his cowardice, what a pathetic excuse of an administration, top to bottom.

The reason they don't get anyone that's remotely good enough is because they won't pay top dollars. Look what Mcallen had to pay to get Enrique Iglesias. Can't afford it or just won't pay it.

He's got a house in Mercedes. And I've been told by some of his neighbors, that he spends way more time in Mercedes than he does in Obregon, Sonora.

He is not immensely popular in Mexico!!! Facts, Montoya, facts.

Not a good role model, Montoya.

Perhaps it's time for Mr. Amigo to be from other cities in the Rio Grande Valley, which is what Brownsville needs.

Horrible selection! Find better people for once.

EDDIE LUCIO JR DRAFT DODGER

Meanwhile, tourism officials from big Texas cities have warned that the proposal could cost them hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue. Almost a week after Houston hosted Super Bowl LI, the NFL raised the prospect that SB 6 will impact future championship football games in Texas. And in a statement regarding Texas' proposal, the NBA has indicated it considers "a wide range of factors when making decisions about host locations for league-wide events like the All-Star Game; foremost among them is ensuring an environment where those who participate and attend are treated fairly and equally."

EDDIE LUCIO III YOU ARE A JOKE!

Facing heckles on the floor, Rep. Eddie Lucio III, D-Brownsville, issued an emotionally charged warning, likely echoing the thoughts of his Democratic colleagues: “Don’t mess with me today. I’m cautioning you. I’m a proud COCO-HILLBILLY and will not stand for it.”

Narco Fashion new theme at the next costume party...

Narco fashion falls under a wider narcoculture umbrella, which includes narco TV such as La Reina del Sur and Narcos, as well as narco music, which takes the form of corridos and now here. These narco corridos are Mexican ballads which recount tales of drug dealers and their exploits through song.

And besides he came at a reduced price because of his background.
