MR. AMIGO CONFIRMS: IT WILL COST YOU $$$ TO SEE CHAVEZ, BUT HE WILL ONLY BE BEFORE THE GENERAL PUBLIC ONCE

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Just as some critics predicted, Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez will only be available if you have $100, or if you buy a table for eight for $800 from the Mr. Amigo Association.

Those prices apply only if you want to attend the Friday, Feb. 28 Mr. Amigo Association President's Costume Ball at the Brownsville Events Center. This does not guarantee you that you will be able to rub elbows (or throw blows) with the boxer. Rather, it lets you sit in your chair and see him at a distance.

Apparently, that's only if you have at least $2,500 to $5,000 to get one. It’s only for top sponsors and board members and a few elected officials

The only other public venue where people will be able to see Chavez will be at SombreroFest in Washington Park and only if you pay the $15 entry fee apart from attending the placing of his plaque on the Mr. Amigo at Linear Park hall of fame in front of the federal courthouse.

Why SombreroFest? Because that's the night that Los Tigres del Norte, the legendary conjunto which recently released their "Live at Folsom Prison" album will appear before – we're sure – a packed house.

Chavez, who arrives in Brownsville that Thursday, will not attend any of the Charro Days parades as most other Mr. Amigos have done in the past.

The last Mr. Amigo Arturo Elias Ayub, went to the parade in Matamoros, skipped the 82nd Annual Charro Days International Parade Saturday, then boarded his private jet and flew off back to Mexico and stood up the parade-goers.

SombreroFest revelers will get to see Chavez on the main stage screen as they await Los Tigres.

Chavez will also cross the river, attend the parade in Matamoros, and then board a commercial airline at the airport, and head back to Sonora.

So if you want to rub elbows with Chavez, it's going to cost you a pretty peso. The venues, security and facilities will be paid by the city. But then again, that's us, too, isn't it?

Being named Mr. Amigo used to mean something back in the day. Now the bozo's who are running the association do not know who to pick or pick idiots who are only interested in cashing in. There are so many artist who would make better Mr. Amigo's. Alejandro Fernandez, Pepe Aguilar, Ramon Ayala, Alejandra Guzman, Ana Gabriel, Yuri and the list can go on. The mayor talks about wanting to bring people to visit Brownsville, well bring someone who the people love and who appreciates the people and visitors will come to Brownsville. Bring someone like this person or last years idiot and people will look to go somewhere else.

Who wants to come to this shit hole, what to be held up in traffic for hours and that's all over this shit hole village. ALL main streets are nothing but traffic jams. Go some where else to shop, eat and entertainment. OH but they want MORE bike trails and beer joints downtown.

LOL! It is not the Mayor's fault the bozos at Mr. Amigo have lost touch with reality.

The recent past presidents have simply tried to out do each other and have screwed up royally in doing so.

Screw them and their overpriced events. They only take care of their own and their political connections.

Charro days is dead, it lose its favor of been number 1 in the RGV. Today, even Los Fresno has a better rodeo activity. The deadbeat city commissioners are just blind for letting the charro day / amigo committee to be in charge. The Mr. Amigo is getting to be a joke. Who is really paying for this event, look in the mirror taxpayers.

Pay money to see a has been boxer? This sounds like the fiasco that developed when Mcallen bought Enrique Iglesias and it cost hundreds of thousands dollars!

I guess we'll have to wait and see after a couple of years what it cost to bring a "has been boxer" to town?

Agree 100% that this “Mr. Amigo” stuff needs to stop!!

I hope it rains every day and charro days is cancelled. Has happened before.

Who would want to be Mr.Amigo in the first place? Word got out a couple of years ago that the Mr. Amigo association drags the
“Honorees” around around on a leash to kiss the asses of their sponsors. If you want some great reading, you should check out the list of “celebrities “ that turn down this high honor. There is little more to Brownsville than Charro Days.

I concur with 3:02 PM. Ese arroz ya se cociĆ³. Time to change gears, bro.

Brownsville residents LEAVE Brownsville during charro days. Now that the charter schools are not participating, Charter school parents have NO REASON to attend the parades either. Next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I will take a trip up the state. We will attend BORDER FEST in Mcallen, Brownsville was once a beautiful city, the pride of the Valley until the leadership got greedy and the consequences are evident.
I was born here, I will die here, but in the meantime, I have NO INTEREST in what is going on here.

Be sure and tour este idiota by all the 1000's and 1000's of political signs that are allowed by these elected officials to be displayed like some great acheivement. Delusional morons.

"Brownsville love it or leave it" our new city slogan. Mr. Amigo is just a part of what's wrong with our city. But we need to exercise our right to vote and try to change it. Love it or leave it. That's all Folks.
