BISD SUSPENDS CLASSES 1 MORE WEEK AFTER SPRING BREAK

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Brownsville Independent School District Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez announced today that Spring Break will be extended for one more week and that instead of all BISD campuses and offices and regular district operations resuming on Monday, March 23, 202, they will resume Monday, March 30.

All other personnel, including teachers, administrators and support staff, would report to work as scheduled on March 23. The district said the situation would be re-evaluated next Wednesday to determine when students would return.

Gutierrez said the district administration's change were made in accordance to President Donald Trump's guidelines asking that U.S. resident to remain at home for the next 15 days to blunt the transmission of the COVID-19.

BISD trustee Phil Cowen said the decision was made by the administration and that he fully supported the move.

"That's why we have him there," Cowen said.

He said that moves were being contemplated now on how to provide breakfast, noon and evening meals to the majority of its students. He said the district's bus drivers could probably deliver the meals to the students, if need be,

He said the district is also evaluating how it would provide classes to students online in a district where many students do not have high-speed internet access. He said the district is having ongoing talks with Spectrum to see if it could use its system to provide online classes across the city.

This move, long planned with steps undertaken to establish a virtual classroom such as providing them with tablets, is farther along than many people think, he said.

"The trick now is not how to get the students out of the schools, it's how we're going to get them back in and prevent infection going back to the students' homes. That's why we have our administrators and we let them do their job."

Teachers, bus drivers and custodians have kids too.

Meanwhile, the adult employees will be out shopping and socializing and risk contracting the virus while going back to work to spread it around just enough to give it to the students when they return. Take a nod from McAllen ISD Dr. 350.

How about the teachers and support employees...they should be protected too. According to what I am hearing, The kids are not as in much danger as the adults of this virus. Send the kids to school and keep the teachers at home seems to be the answer for who is getting the coronavirus most. Superintendent should keep all employees home. He called a meeting with principals and that is now a violation of the mayors directive. This guy can't make a decision even if you pay him $300,000. BISD was always leading the decisions of other school districts, now we are following. Do the right thing BISD...from a teacher in the trenches.

Stay home people, it's the best thing to do.

What will the staff do that week when they are required to go to work? Sit in their isolated room and pick their noses? It seems that all of a sudden people are realizing that Mr. 350 is not worth $3.50 cents. He calls a meeting of all the principals (against mayor's orders) (otro sonso) and then he asks the principals what they think should be done. Esperanza would have come in and given her directives, opened it up for suggestions and discussion and then made a decision. Principals could not believe they were actually hearing what they heard. He has two top-paying assistants and what are they doing? What did they suggest? Let the employees make the suggestions so that they will be blamed for what goes wrong. If I were a teacher, I would report to work after Spring Break and sit in my car in the parking lot to avoid contact. And yet, what would I do with my children?
If he is going to feed the kids at the bus stops, will there not be a group of more than 10 at one time? His PhD is the same thing, '@#$%" piled higher and deeper.

Fire this idiot where he come from?

Vela is an idiot that is worshipped by the morons of the RGV...now you can see why people use the term “stupid Mexicans”...

Anonymous said...

Atkinson is the one that brought him in...blame her!!!!

Anonymous said...

Where were you all when we had a superintendent that was the leader for setting precedent in the RGV for other school districts to follow and copy. You listened to Atkinson and hired this idiot. BPD should go arrest him for having violated city orders when he held that huge meeting at the Glass Palace with all administrators. Edinburg is now laughing at BISD for being stupid and taking him off their hands along with his sidekicks. We are the losers and all because of some personal vendetta. Now lets see where that personal vendetta leads for Atkinson - she was BISD's virus from the time she started.

Parents upset because their kids won't have food to eat if the schools are closed???? Some get a large amount of food stamps to feed their kids, so why do they need for the schools to feed them? So they can have some more food stamps to trade for beer and other stuff. I say, "Take the stamps away and let the schools feed the kids. If so, why would they need so many stamps?
You see them loading their carts with chips full of chili and limon, and nothing but munchies and pizzas - microwave food cause parents don't know how to cook anymonre. Let them eat PB & J sandwiches for morning noon and after school.

All of a sudden the teachers have become so important - to serve as baby-sitters and feed their kids. NOW, why don't you continue to knock them down like so many do through out the year. Now you see just how much teachers contribute to the development of the whole child and now even the families!
