(Ed.'s Note: The Brownsville Boys in Blue descended upon plasma donors (mostly from Matamoro) Sunday as they stood (at a social distance marked on the sidewalk) at the plasma center at Adams and 13th Street. Matamoros Punto Informativo mistakenly said it was the enforcement of the city curfew, but it really is the shelter in place edict that is being enforced across the counties of South Texas.
Whether the plasma companies will take this lying down - the stanching of their profits - is yet to be seen. Donors from Matamoros earn the weekly equivalent of some $70 for two weekly sessions. Compare than to the $10 a day minus union dues and other fees charged to maquila workers in Matamoros for a six-day week and you can readily see the impact this will have not only upon the plasma companies, but also upon the donors.
With maquilas already affected by the slowdown in manufacturing around the world, is enforcing the edict placing more stress on Matamoros residents who count on the extra income to hold their heads above water? And will the shelter in place edict remain in place for non-residents?)
