A TALE OF TO ENTITIES: ONE COLLECTS, THE OTHER DOES NOT

(Ed.'s Note: Business is brisk at the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector's dive-thru windows at the former Wells Fargo bank. Motorists line up to renew their vehicle registration and/or pay their property taxes.

If someone needs to get new plates or make payment arrangements on their property taxes, individual appointments are made so they can enter the building and deal with it personally. Staff indicates that they will make face masks available should customers need one.

At the other end of town, the drive-thru windows of the Public Utility Board are blocked off and no one can use them to pay their bills. The board recently passed a policy to suspend penalties for late payments and discontinue utility disconnects.

However, the principal remains due when the COVID-19 crisis is over. PUB customers say that this month's bills did not contain a pre-addressed return envelope for customers to mail their  payments. There will be balloon payment and hell to pay a few months down the road.)

Bunch idiots at Pub and I mean the air conditioned employees.

It's not a huge divide because Brownsville remains a Barrio Town, but it still has its Haves and its Have-nots. The Haves are winning.

BPUB doesn't care about the community, period. The top brass has salaries of over a quarter of a million dollar..on a city where around 30% live below poverty level. They spend millions on useless, stupid projects that lead to nowhere (tenaska), they raise utility rates in order to raise money for the tenaska project, that project is on hold (nothing has been built, hell..not even started yet), they have millions and millions of dollars sitting in the bank for all this rate hikes and still nothing. During this pandemic, a lot of people are loosing jobs, incomes, small businesses are closing..they just don't have the money to pay. What does BPUB do? Delay late fees, but you still have to pay up all the utilities when all this is over. Imagine paying up months of backup bills when you don't have any money at all.
BPUB doesn't give a fuck and will never do. They loose millions of dollars of money like it is just a few cents and don't say anything. They keep everything under wraps and hidden from the public. That is not how a public entity supported by local people taxes and fees is supposed to be run.
I have email my commissionaire almost monthly to ask this questions and to investigate and audit all BPUB books..you should be doing the same thing!! Until we start asking questions and demanding answers, nothing will ever change here.
