That scam with the ATM has existed forever. That has also been done in gasoline stations when you put in your card.
Only thing you can do is check the slot BEFORE you put in the card and hope it doesn't happen. That is one of the reasons the chip replaced the slide, yet gasoline stations and ATM STILL use the slide way.
