Special to El Rrun-RrunMinutes from the April 2 teleconference between the Cameron County Judge's Office and Emergency Management Office and Brownsville Independent School District reveal that the county and State of Texas purposes have crossed wires.
On the one hand, BISD wants to continue to give free lunches to students while complying with the state's dictum on having only one person in a car. BISD requires that the child receiving the meal be present with the adult driving the vehicle.
Today, the BISD announced that: "The Child Nutrition Meal Program will be postponed effective Wednesday, April 8, 2020, until further notice."
Now there's been another wrench thrown in the works. Apparently, - and unbeknownst to the public - two BISD students and one teacher have tested positive for COVID-19. The danger is that the virus will be transmitted during the delivery of the meals.
And there's another snag. Gov. Greg Abbott has delayed the starts of school in classrooms until May 4, throwing the schedule off for the expected start of classes April 30.

April 1 means nothing to a virus, but it has worked like a magnifying glass to concentrate the economic sting of the Covid-19 shutdown on out-of-work residents and rent-burdened families. As millions of Americans struggle to make rent — or sacrifice other necessities to do so — a growing cohort of local leaders around the country are questioning the steps taken by lawmakers to protect renters. Representatives from city councils in nine major U.S. cities, including several dealing with profound health crises due to the coronavirus pandemic, used the first day of the month to call on lawmakers to cancel rent obligations altogether.
Brownsville?
BISD just wants to continue milking the lunch money, this is disaster and these folks just think how yo make a buck.
Does it really matter go outside and look at the traffic.
BISD's last day of school for students is May 27. With the COVID-19 virus infiltrating the valley, it shouldn't be expected that classes will resume on campus. Teachers can offer effective instruction online but the problem is, not all students have equal access to the internet. Yes, they all have their ubiquitous cellphone, but cellphones are designed for talking and viewing and are kind of awkward at best for creating academic content like writing a research paper, reading a text easily, etc. Teachers need to have a 'Plan B' for instruction that doesn't involve internet access, and that is exactly what BISD has done by having teachers and staff create instructional packets for handout and use by the students. We can get through this.
For meals, the district might print out a meal card or ticket so that only one person need be in the car to pick up the meals for their kids. I'm sure our governor wants to avoid having to issue a statewide 'shelter in place' mandate, but it looks as though no one in Texas will be able to remain safe from the COVID-19 virus, not even those of us fortunate enough to live in the Rio Grande Valley.
Do we know these 2 kids are welfare recipients and get the free meals? This is such a stupid mamon program. End the meal giving these kids are already getting FOOD STAMPS THAT'S WHY MOST ARE OBESE..VERY FAT!!!!
STOP THE MADNESS STOP MAKING PEOPLE MAMONES. If you want to eat...WORK FOR IT. Want a house...WORK FOR IT. Want things...WORK FOR IT...PERIOD!!!!!!
And yet the Sheriff says that families should not be out and each person will be cited. Sheriff apparently doesn't understand that kids must be present to receive food being distributed by BISD. But then Sheriff Lucio doesn't understand much at his age; so the Reyna brothers are writing his words and probably dressing him each day. Time for a new Sheriff and time for the County Judge to coordinate more closely with BISD and other "governments" in the county he proceeds with is "Cuomo like" press conferences.
If parents get food stamps and will be receiving a stimulus check, why should the school be responsible for feeding their kids. Get back in the kitchen and make the frijoles con arros that our mothers used to make for us on a daily bases and eating in the cafeteria was a treat.
As I and others predicted over a week ago, the "Rally around the Flag" syndrome is now wearing off and people are really sick of Trump's lying, incompetence, boasting, and self-congratulation as their loved ones sicken and die. It only gets worse for Trump from here.
There was another SpaceX explosion yesterday. Please report on it.

Mr. Montoya, please be aware that the Christian church on coffee port/Jaime Zapata ave. distributes food on a almost every day (M-F)basis and instead of Brownsville PD making those people comply with the stay home mandate, they HELP MAKE a total chaos during the peak time of distribution!! I have to travel that road almost 3 to 4 times a week to take food to an 87 yr old relative who lives alone, the first time that happened I was stopped by a BPD officer directing traffic; he asked me if I was going to the church, I said "No, I am taking a meal to an elderly relative", he let me go through the middle while 2 lines of cars were OBSTRUCTING the road to enter the church grounds. I 've passed the same road at least twice and now the people from the church are the ones directing traffic to let the long lines of cars enter the grounds. Not ONE SINGLE CAR looked old, in bad condition. Most are SUV's, new or semi-new, with more than 2 or 3 kids inside with one or two adults. I would think a church (ANY religion, doesn't matter) would care more about the elderly or the homeless. WHY was the Brownsville PD helping these people instead of enforcing the law? Just go around those times on a Monday or a Friday between 11 am and 1 pm and you will see what I am talking about.
According to the online Herald BISA is stopping the meals.
If folks think the measure here are stick, just move to the Philippines. They will shoot to kill anybody on the streets. Many other countries have restriction far worse than the US. Trump is doing a great job.
TRUMP IGNORED A “BLACK SWAN” WARNING FROM THE ARMY
Throughout January, as the 2019 novel Coronavirus exploded in China and experts in the United States and around the world warned that the threat of pandemic was becoming all but certain, various agencies took a swing at trying to explain to Trump just what that would mean. Among them was the Army, who on Feb. 3 assembled a presentation showing that COVID-19 was potentially a massive “black swan” event that would completely disrupt the U.S. economy and result in over a 100,000 deaths. Even though many aspects of that Army analysis have turned out to be optimistic, the impact projected made COVID-19 the biggest threat the nation has faced since the Cold War. It didn’t matter … because Trump completely ignored it.
Anybody selling food stamps. I'll pay 50 cents on the dollar.
i believe that church has a school
the church is not givingbthe food
rather the government
juat as bisd is not giving food
its the government
the reason the schools give the food is to prove there is a need
and that way they get the money tonpay for the food next year
this way they may arrange contravts with their compadres for a small kickback
remember barbacoa gate the love triangle and the suicide of one Mr Escobedo...
title is misleading
teachers do not prepare or handle the food
and the students did not cintract COVID 19 from the food
oh well
its your blog and i'll keep reading it
