GOV. ABBOTT'S FRIDAY OPENING: WRONG TIME, WRONG PLACE

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Let's see.

The COVID-19 curve in Cameron County is nowhere near flattening.

Cameron County has 412 confirmed cases of COVID-19, as of April 30 (the 401 was yesterday), and 18 reported deaths (one more than yesterday). Brownsville had 130 of the cases and Harlingen had 169.

Across he state, 50 people died last night.

In fact, in the Cameron County and the Rio Grande Valley, it's on a strong upward surge as we speak and new infections indicate that we have a strong two to three weeks coming. The cases have come from all sources - community and travelers - and we are now past the dawning of the realization that the bug has been out there and that we have surpassed the threshold of viral death, an incontrovertible manifestation of its omnipresence in our environs.

What we had never imagined - to be invaded and infected by a world plague - is a reality whose enormous consequences none of us could have predicted. But once the threat was realized, measures were taken to confront it with mixed results because no one knew -not here and not elsewhere in the country - that our global links and the sanctuaries of our elderly would become magnets and incubators of death.

Implementing social distancing and Stay at Home orders in tight-knit social communities like ours in South Texas hasn't been easy. It runs against our nature. But if most of us hadn't complied with those two single measures, the awful results we have endured (18 of our neighbors' deaths now) would be unimaginably worse.

Tomorrow the State of Texas is removing the Stay at Home and face-mask "recommendations" and urging a "soft-opening" of commerce across the state. The mall and restaurants will be open. It is urged all precautions to avoid contagion be taken.  You will be on an honor system to comply.

That's all COVID-19 needs right now in Cameron County, a soft opening. Remember, the rule of thumb for a weakening contagion is two weeks of a flat and downward curve. We're nowhere near that.

Leave Trump and Abbott and Democrats and Republicans out of this. This is about our survival. The time is not right yet.

I bet you will not print this.

401/450000 population of cameron county=0.0008 percent

18/401 death rate= 0.04 percent

Are you kidding me with this bloom and doom.

Get a grip of reality

You should be ashamed for spreading panic. Whether cases are going up is not the important measure. Percentage of cases in Cameron county are 0.0008 of the total population, hardly any hospitalization and hospitals are empty.

This was the point of the lockdown, not to overwhelm the hospital system. That is accomplished. The virus will be around, it will not go away with lockdowns.

Amazing how the concept of exponential growth eludes many residents of our county!

Simple common sense, if you can think for yourself. I'm old, I know when I get sick it is hard for me to get over it. My grandson gets sick next day he is blowing and going. Your government has you acting like sheep, go live in a cave well tell you when you can come out, so you can pay your taxes.

@9:28 & 11:06 I agree with you both 100%. People who still doesn't want to reopen are people who are not affected and huevones. I guarantee that the tyrant King Trevino will Jack up the deaths numbers to proof that he was right and to receive points when elections comes around. Does Trevino care about the small businesses? No! He just about the pizzas, furniture and car wash business! Let's vote this tyrant guy out!

Stay at home under the bed if you want. My family is going to Cheddars right now. Well be having margaritas and chicken fried steak. See you all there, if you dare!

I am not in the health industry my friend, which is good because they are going broke from lack of patients.

If you are so afraid of dying, you should stay home, even after this corona is over.you have a 170 chance higher of dying from accidents than corona. Higher from heart attack, stroke, cancer and flu, which you don't hear much about anymore, it disappeared.

Let the rest of us take our chances, death is part of life.

@ 2128 and 2306
its actually 4%
you see you divide 18 by 401 and multiply times 100 to get the percentage. atleast thats how we did it at la Porta.
so the percentage of infected lopulation for cameron county is acrually .09
not.00089
just sayin

Huevones unite! Demand for everyone to stay at home. The more huevones stay at home the more they breed and multiply. How do you think huevones vote? Democrat or Republican?
Democrat of course. The welfare party.
Huevones for Biden!
Arriba los huevones!
Arriba los arastrados!
Arriba los mantenidos!
Arriba los whiners!
God bless Trump!

For the ones doing their math, just remember that you need to multiply *100 in order to get a percentage..... Maybe not that important 😂
