(Cheerleaders Bernice Manry, Bob Puckett, Johnny Cabler, and Bob Goodrich.)
And to cheer them on and leading the fans from the sidelines that year's drill squad and cheerleaders added to the spirit of the game by their presence at every football encounter.
The games then were played at Tucker Field and attracted huge crowds of students and local folks.

The football team was heroic on the gridiron and gave them plenty to cheer, trashing the opposition by scoring 328 points. They ended the season undefeated with the opponents only tallying two points combined in the entire season.
The Cheerleaders were aided by the drill squad, a preppy organization of upper-class girls who were required to show their true loyalty. They were adorned with brown and gold dresses that added color to the game.
The squad was under the leadership of Miss Kendrick whose well-rehearsed girls put on a sequence of drills between halves at every game. The Eagles played a total of nine games against: Santa Rosa, La Feria, Mercedes, Alamo Heights, Donna, Harlingen, San Benito (the only 2 pts against the Eagles), Weslaco and winning district against McAllen 27-0.
Although they were only four cheerleaders, they certainly proved that in their case less was more was not better. Their spirit and energy overshadowed their lack of numbers. “Executing clever maneuvers made the cheering a necessary element at the football games,” so the fans said. Can you still hear them?

And then Brownsville High was introduced to running back Cleveland Vann and the Seguin Matadors! ja ja ja
Boy Newman, the QB, went on to Southmost where he led the Scorpions to wins over the A&M freshman team. Then to USC before finishing his playing career at UT for the Longhorns. That BHS team was great at every position and came within a failed goal line trick play of winning state.
COVID-19 Grim Reaper Is Here, and He’s HAPPY!!!
Inviting everybody to go out and celbrate be happy that I'll be there waiting for ya al'...
I still say that BISD should have kept Brownsville High School, the new one on Price Rd and that either Porter or Pace should have been named Hanna. We needed our school to continue it's traditions and memories of all of those who had graduated from the old high school until 1967. All other districts with more than one high school, have kept their original high school with the original name. We will always be the BHS Golden Eagles - not Hanna's Bananas!
at the time the bisd board was all gringos so go figure..
In those days the team consisted of at least 15 Anglos who led the team. These days all 5 high schools have almost all Hispanic athletes who haven't or can't win squat. The new game here is soccer and it is proving to be our best boys sport and perhaps best girls sport. The old days are behind BISD and we need to be real. Football is dead until black or Anglo students come to Brownsville....and perhaps all go to the same high school. Until then, let's watch and support soccer, women's sports...but not football. The upper valley has moved forward with wrestling and other sports that BISD should consider. That's the only way BISD can be a winner and our kids benefit from sports.
Dan Barnhart played with Philadelphia eagles
‘29 team best team ever
John Sylvester I think played at Rice
Yes, BHS lost everything with a stroke of pen...politicians doing what they do best!!
Yes! No more whites are playing football or any other HS sports throughout the valley. We in Brownsville are waiting money trying to play the of gladiators with whips. Sams Stadium is always half empty...paying 8 dollars to watch low level football is a crime. And joe Rodriguez was leading the pack of crooks
To 9:10 am, ja!ja! The joke's on you, BHS played Seguin in '69, not '29, ja!ja!
Again its the leadership not the students. Bring in good coaches not ones interested in making money or other agends. pendeja/o
69 team was overrated
The players suck
Coaches cannot do anything without good horses
A GOOD coach don't need good horses.
PURO PINCHES MARICONES DID THEY WORE SMALL CHEERLEADERS DRESSES? JOTOS.
How can a good coach produce with low level athletes like we have in Brownsville... 180 lbs 5’8 football players
We? so you are a low level athlete living here? No wonder
Correction: given schedule of games was for the 1928 team
