Protesters toppled a statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, in Richmond, Va., on Wednesday night, as demonstrators across the country continued to target symbols of white supremacy after the death of George Floyd.
Demonstrators knocked down the statue at about 11 p.m., according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch, and local news reports showed photographs of it lying on the street, with the police nearby before a tow truck carted it away.
The statue was among a number of prominent Confederate monuments that had stood on Monument Avenue in Richmond, which was once the capital of the Confederacy.
On Thursday, Mr. Stoney called Davis “a racist & traitor who fled our city as his troops carried out orders to burn it to the ground.”
“He never deserved to be up on that pedestal,” the mayor tweeted, vowing that the city would take steps to remove other statues soon.

It came down one week after Mayor Levar Stoney of Richmond said he would propose an ordinance to remove all four Confederate monuments that the city controls along Monument Avenue. Mr. Stoney said he would introduce the bill on July 1, when a new state law goes into effect giving local governments the authority to remove the monuments on their own.
“Richmond is no longer the capital of the Confederacy — it is filled with diversity and love for all — and we need to demonstrate that,” Mr. Stoney said in a statement.
On Thursday, Mr. Stoney called Davis “a racist & traitor who fled our city as his troops carried out orders to burn it to the ground.”

In 2018, a commission appointed by Mr. Stoney recommended that the Davis monument be removed and replaced with a new statue. “Of all the statues, this one is most unabashedly Lost Cause in its design and sentiment,” the commissioners wrote. They also noted that Davis was not from Richmond or Virginia.

Mr.Stoney, Mayor of Richmond, Brovo!!!!!!! The man has the balls to do the right thing when a monument represents a symbol of bigotry and discrimination.
What is the Mayor of Brownsville going to do with the rock at Washington Park?
The commission appointed by Mayor Stoney noted that Jefferson Davis was not from Richmond or Virginia.
Could Jefferson Davis be from Brownsville, Texas? If so, no wonder that city leaders have refused to remove the monument.

In a series of angry tweets on Thursday, Donald J. Trump lashed out at the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, declaring, “This is not the military I avoided serving in.”
Calling Milley’s apology for appearing in last week’s controversial church photo op “a disgrace,” Trump said, “The United States military of my youth was known for courage and valor, which is why I got a podiatrist’s note to get out of being a part of it."

The name Fronton should be re-placed back
Bobby has put more emphasis on renaming the city of Austin, Texas than removing the rock in Brownsville. Just like the Trump, Bobby is all about him ("I am an advocate", "I donated"). Also, like Trump, he enjoys calling people who disagree with him names such as "troll", "idiots", "morons", etc. He claims to be the "voice" of Brownsville. At one time, he was also a strong proud supporter of the pizza maker and no action Mayor of Brownsville.
If you want to change history, you have to take action whether it is selective indignation or a major political issue. Bobby, you want to be the "Voice" of Brownsville? Take action, bring down the rock. (Are you going to let McHale and Juan lead the way in removing the rock?)
Many of your readers seem to be more concern with renaming the city of Austin, the military base of Sam Houston; than, addressing the issue in their own back yard (the rock). Such concerns are indeed will grounded but not within the reach of this community. The rock is here. The rock is a symbol of bigotry and discrimination in Brownsville. Such monuments are being taken down all over this nation. Take down the rock Brownsville!!!!!!!!!!!

Washington (CNN) It's head-scratching, really, that the most prominent Army base in America is named for Braxton Bragg.
He was on the wrong side of history, as a Confederate general and a slave owner.
It's hard to find a redeeming account of Bragg. Historians repeatedly highlight just how poorly he got along with everyone -- except perhaps Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States.
"The irony of training at bases named for those who took up arms against the United States, and for the right to enslave others, is inescapable to anyone paying attention," retired four-star Army General David Petraeus wrote this week in The Atlantic.
With our nation calling for the removal of the names of Confederate generals from its military installation, Brownsville continues to honor the same individual, Jefferson Davis, who led those generals in a war against the Union of the United States in order to preserve bigotry and slavery for their own economic welfare.

Crews in Hemming Park in downtown Jacksonville on Tuesday morning took down a 122-year-old statue and plaque that honored fallen Confederate soldiers, according to CNN affiliate WJAX.
During a peaceful protest Tuesday on the steps of City Hall, Mayor Lenny Curry announced that all Confederate monuments citywide will be removed. This includes three monuments and eight historical markers, the mayor's office told CNN in a statement.

Crews in historic Old Town Alexandria removed a bronze statue of a Confederate soldier named "Appomattox" last Tuesday morning. The memorial was erected in 1889 to honor Confederate soldiers from the Virginia city.

The United Daughters of the Confederate chose to erect many monuments in close proximity to legislative and judicial power centers, which is why so many Confederate markers are today located near courthouses and on state capitol grounds—a reminder to black folks that white institutions were not there to serve their interests.
“The United Daughters of the Confederate put monuments in places where citizens have to work with their government,” says Karen Cox. “If you're an African-American person or a person of color, you have to pass by that Confederate monument on your way into the courthouse. It was a reminder that you're not likely to get a fair trial or fair treatment inside of that building.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Jefferson Davis monument continues to stand at the entrance of Washington Park in Brownsville. A group of residents continue to fight for its removal.
“This is an artifact of white supremacy, because that’s what it is. This is an artifact of white supremacy,” Mark Kaswan, an activist with Frontera Progressives said as he turned and looked at the 92-year-old monument that memorialize Jefferson Davis, the only president of the confederate states.
“He was a strong proponent of white supremacy and the United Daughters of the Confederacy really were calling him a martyr. Really reflects their purpose which is to promote this idea of white supremacy.”
Kaswan and his organization have been involved in the movement to remove the monument from the park for the last three years.
