DEAD AND DYING AT TREVINO'S DOOR: CLOSE COURTHOUSES

By Juan Montoya

As the numbers of Cameron County employees working at the three courthouses downtown afflicted with the COVID-19 disease climbs skyward, County Judge Eddie Trevino has resisted common-sense and has kept the facilities open.

This despite the fact that numerous county employees who remained at the open facilities are hospitalized or at home.

And now, a popular Cameron County Probation Office employee at the peak of his health and who enjoyed a remarkable degree of health and well-being has died as a result of catching the virus at work at the Harrison Street probation office. Adrian Gomez, who was a personal trainer at the Sports Palace, a local gym, has died of COVID-19.

County employees who knew him are in grief at the news and blame the reluctance of Trevino and the county commissioners to do what should have been done weeks, if not months ago: shut down all three downtown facilities, lose a few dollars, but protect the health of county employees and their families. Shut it down immediately and thoroughly sanitize them buildings or lose more people.

Will he? Or is his love of the Almighty Dollar prove so overpowering of his human feelings that he will remain obstinate in his recalcitrance?

Cameron County Clerk Sylvia Garza-Perez said her department staff is distance working from home after an outbreak at the Levee Street county building and confirmed that she is down with COVID-19 under doctor's care. Weakly, she agreed that the building should have been shut down weeks ago, but trailed off as she said: "We tried, Juan, but you know..."

At the Dancy Building, another casualty of the infection is none other than Eliseo Davila, Administrative Assistant to Pct. 2 Commissioner Joey Lopez. He is currently at home with his wife and child taking medication and trying to stave off the aggressive infection he caught at the historical building between Madison and Monroe.

How many more Eddie?

Cut your losses and the final losses to the families of county employees. All those workers at the three county buildings in Brownsville and others in the rest of the county and county Public Works and Road and Bridge barns are running the danger of getting sick, dying, or of transmitting the COVID-19 to their communities and families.

If need be, keep the commercial international bridge open and close the other to spans to Mexico. Brownsville people have found the loophole to no bars open in Cameron County and drive across to quaff a few over there.

Will you wait until your counterparts in Bexar, Harris or Travis counties show you the way so you can copy their public announcements word for word? Don't wait too long. A family might lose a loved one working for the county while you dilly dally. Is it worth it?

(Note: It doesn't matter how healthy you may be. COVID-19 is no respecter of persons or apparent health. Don De leon, a hulking, large man who has been a candidate for numerous offices and is the son of former city commissioner Ernesto De Leon is also reported very sick with the virus. And former city commissioner Leo Garza is said to be stricken abd battling with the plague as well.)

Ya miras la tempestad y no te hincas?

God help Cameron County with this coronavirus pandemic.

No hazard pay for employees because Judge Trevino said on Facebook live there’s no need to pay it if the state doesn’t mandate it. Cameron County employees make more in unemployment than what this commissioners court can provide. $600 a week, $2,400 a month. Let that sink in.

Still hasn't said that the mandates are backed by the Governor so they can be enforced by Law. Till that happens nobody give a shit.

Don't blame the buildings; blame the idiots who don't pay attention to the warnings and need to go get drunk or mess around just for the fun. But once it hits their family or a close friend they all of a sudden realize what they are doing wrong. Use your common sense!

As was predicted South Padre Island refused to close the beaches. Why just blame Eddie Trevino you can put 5 city commissioners and the mayor of Covid City(SPI) on your shit list as well. Now go out there on 4th of July weekend and see how bad it gets. Will see if they can enforce all that social distancing and Mask wearing bullshit. People don't care.

Governor Abbott recently was complimented on national TV by Trump for his policy of opening up Texas and getting business back to the way things were before the pandemic. Abbott had a seemingly great idea of just phasing in the opening of Texas businesses in a gradual manner over a period of time. It sounded like it might work, right?

Well, Abbott's policy which was applauded by Trump hasn't seemed to work very well as we now see that Texas is heading towards a spiraling crisis in the number of COVID-19 infections in the state. A state-wide shelter-in-place mandate from our governor seems inevitable. Will Abbott have the brass to issue this mandate or will he cower for fear of retribution or censure by the president? Most importantly, will the people of Texas be able to comply with such a mandate in the face of also having to provide for themselves and their families financially?

This is the problem when you are complimented by someone who is an idiot.

Close the county offices to the public. They can use mail in, online or drive thru services. This will help keep the employees safe. Come on Judge!!!

Get your facts right before you start making false accusations Adrian Gomez has worked for the county since 2012 so stop magnifying something that’s not true !!!!

You people amaze me. What proof do you have that lockdowns work? You think that little thin homemade mask will save you!

In california they have been locked down since March and what happened? Record infections. The infection will spread no matter what, if will run it's course and then it will be gone. Of course All you hear the media talk about is Florida and texas. No objectivity whatsoever.

All the fear lovers forget to mention that mortality rate is way down. 55 deaths in Cameron county in 4 months.oh my god!!! And in Texas we are 43rd out of 50 states for mortality rates. New York 170 per 100000, Texas 8 per 100000.

As they say look at the science and data.

Sylvia is a class act liar. She was one of the few who still had all her staff working when all depts were given the option of skeleton crew. She was one of the first to bring back all her employees. This falls on her. She is a horrible horrible leader. Her staff can't stand her. Only those that kiss her ass. She micromanages her office n staff and berates them. Other elected officials can't stand her.

Regardless of what the Texas Governor says; it is time for Mayors and County Judges to take stand and close bars and non essential businesses down or prepare for a human health crisis. Mayors have a right to close the beaches to prevent the spread and it is the right thing to do in the face of an out of control pandemic. Hopefully, Cameron County leadership will lead by putting the lives of the people first.

@5:51 It's all political! King Trevino want to look like he's a Christian and cares about the people. As Mayor he didn't do sh*t for public! He only gets richer and when a camel can finally go through a needle, then he might go to heaven!
