BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Brownsville educators are voicing their concerns about how administration is handling the pandemic.
“The new Superintendent doesn’t do everything possible to help reduce the risk of exposure,” said Association of Brownsville Educators Representative, Ida Abeldano.
Brownsville Independent School District employees are posting pictures on social media of expired hand sanitizers they say, were given to them by the district.
“It was probably sitting at the warehouse this whole time because we researched the company and that company doesn’t even make that sanitizer anymore. It’s that old,” Abeldano said.
Abeldano claimed employees were given sanitizers that expired as far back as 2011.
“It smelled horrible, it was very sticky and gooey. They had to wash their hands a couple times and it was still leaving residue on their hands,” she added.
According to Abeldano, administrators stopped distributing the hand sanitizers only to replace them with expired sanitizing wipes.
“It’s a very serious thing. In our area, a lot of people have compromised health issues,” she emphasized.
What’s even more to her is the passing of another BISD employee.
“A custodian that lost her life. She was a working employee and left from what we haven’t been able to confirm left the campus feeling ill and lost her battle this morning to COVID,” said Abeldano.
She said employees have been working for three weeks already but have not received the proper PPE nor a safety plan.
“It brings up the issues of the rest of the employees that have worked throughout the summer. The custodians, the food service. Were they all given proper PPE or was this what they were having to work with as well?”
KVEO/CBS4 reached out to Brownsville ISD multiple times for a comment but have yet to hear back. The district said on its Facebook page they received two truck loads of PPE from the Texas Education Agency just yesterday.
The post does not say when that supply will be distributed.

Gutierrez, are you using the same sanitizer? Maybe you should try Trump's Clorax or Lysol treatment on your brain. Your salary allows you to buy boxes and boxes of it. But you know what? He is not strong enough to stand up for his own decisions. He doesn't wear the pants at BISD. He depends on his two
women deputy superintendents to do everything for him and he has the vaguest idea of what is going on in the district except be a socialite. And, then, on top of everything, he has Minerva to tell him exactly what he can and can not do and Minerva carries the messages from Atkinson, who still controls every action the board takes. Gutierrez is not equipped to run a district like BISD and stand up for his scruples and not the ones that he is ordered to do.
Order all the out-dated supplies to be dumped at the front of the Main Office and have them wash the tiles in front with the sanitizer and maybe even the superintendent's office. Lastima de hombre!
Please post a list of all the victims of COVID that worked at BISD and died.
Make sure to provide a bottle of the new sanitizer to them. All due respect to those who died in action at BISD. And we still have so many that are ill in the hospital right now. Why should we not be angry? I could be next!

Expired PPE for all the Departments and classified staff. Classified were told to buy 4 Dolla face plastic covers from the BISD Finance Office. Their Secre took orders and then gave them out. Finance Administrator is making extra cash from this virus. So disgusting. The Superintendent has no clue this was going on. Too busy with surveys and surveys and more meetings and meetings to discuss the last meetings. All District around us have everything set up and teachers and classified feel safe. No district has had some much surveys than BISD and still nothing.

Mr. Cowen told many he wanted a nice person to run the district. He got one.
Minerva wanted someone to hire Rose and her firends in a position. Rose got hired.
Atkinson wanted someone who would approve all her dealings including providing contracts for TSC. She got it.
Perezreyes wanted a someone to let Baltazar hire his lawyers. They hired more lawyers chosen by Salazar.
Castro wanted some who could let him take pictures and allow him on campuses. Supt. was great at first and then he stunk.
Tipton wanted someone who would pay TSC for all BISD and allow her to force students to TSC. She got that and more.
Drue promised to hire someone who would bring change and hire her friends. She got someone who is afraid to make decisions and friends who are frustrated to no end because they have no say in BISD.
The Supt does not communicate with us in central office. If he is in a good mood, he speaks. If not, he ignores you like he is high up and you are low down.
This board got what they wanted and are living with their decisions. Remember in November.
Why should Ida figure out what to do about solving the problem. It is the superintendent who is making the big bucks to do things like that and also his

So, now, lets hold those idiot board members accountable and get rid of them at our next election - if we are still around to vote in Nov and the following elections. Oh, and make sure to place some of the hand sanitizer on the boards' table for their next meeting and see if they are smart enough to check the expiration date! But how many of us stood up to the board when they dismissed our last superintendent who did know how to wear the pants and function accordingly. We do not know what we had until we lose it, and I am ready to admit that we lost a super superintendent just to please the pockets of the board members. And who started it all? Philip Cowen was at first BFF with Castro and Perez Reyes. All went down hill for the trio. Erasmo la cago. Perez Reyes is so corrupt and ignorant. Cowen thinks he invented the BISD internet like Al Gore. Cowen is ridiculous. The Super has two ladies who employees say are doing all the work for him. The AAs are Minerva's BFFs, Longoria and Rubio. Rubio talks a big game and don't shut up. The other AA are silent followers and are scared to get sent back to a campus. It's a big mess in the inside and all they do is surveys after surveys. Employees say the surveys are all rigged. Remember 33k a month and all the Super can show is those damn surveys. They even want to open a Survey Administrator position, for another Minerva BFF. Any HS kid can do a survey, mine does!

The hand sanitizer was first given to teachers early this year, many complained to principals but they didn't learn the lesson.
