On January, 2019, the board of the Brownsville Independent School District, by a 7-0 vote, voted to place Superintendent Dr. Esperanza Zendejas on administrative leave based on an inquiry into projects she implemented during a drive to upgrade facilities across the district.
The board did that despite the fact that just three months before, on October 2018, the same board gave her a two-year contract extension that boosted her annual salary to $305,000.
Yesterday, the Education Service Center, Region 2 (ESC-2), Board of Directors announced the selection of Zendejas as head of the ESC-2 starting next Wednesday.
A month later, in February, Zendejas announced her resignation from the BISD following a negotiated agreement with the board.
Later, in September 2019, Zendejas landed employment with the San Benito ISD taking over as the San Benito school district’s human resources director.
Zendejas, who first served as Brownsville’s superintendent from 1992-1995, returned to the district’s top administrative position in June 2015.
She will be the first female and first Hispanic to head ESC-2.
Zendejas has been around the track once or twice and knew from her precious tenure as superintendent in Brownsville, Indianapolis, and California that when board membership changes, the superintendent is often the first casualty and makes arrangements – such as her two-year contract approval a few months before her departure – before the hammer falls.
Although some readers said that she would now have oversight over the BISD, that is not correct since BISD falls under Region 1. As overseer of educational experts and consultants, Zendejas said she is looking forward to starting at ESC-2 and "to make a difference and help improve the lives of children" there.

Sylvia Atkinson wanted her out and was telling everyone that was going to happen. Now, the board does not know how to save themselves because the current supt and Sylvia's friend cannot seem to make one good, solid decision. If current board members lose their election, they can thank Sylvia and the current superintendent.

So, I wanted to make sure that I got this correct so I did my research. The BISD Board got rid of Zendejas because la Sylvia knew that she would not allow her to do her thing with vendors. The Board, as they do got rid of Zendejas citing all kind of things made up. Minerva never liked her because she is a smart woman. They all stated that she was not a good superintendent and she wasn’t good for the district.
So now, Zendejas gets a job that the commissioner of education himself places her in. He makes the final decision for this type of job. So she wasn’t good enough for BISD but now the commissioner of education has so much confidence in her ability that he puts her in this position. Here we go again, our district misses out on a great superintendent because this board is CLUELESS AS TO WHAT IS GOOD AROUND HERE! THEY RATHER HAVE LA SYLVIA STEALING THEN A GREAT SUPERINTENDENT LEADING OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. Our kids lose again. When will we get rid of these people? NOVEMBER
Their gain is our loss and many of us are more convinced of that since this board hired this inept superintendent who continues to allow micro-managing from the board. Espy is a hard-working educator; education is her life! She is able to think out of the box and bring in new initiatives. She cares about the children and those that support the children. She is not perfect and neither are you and I, but of all the superintendents BISD has had, she is the only one who dared step on toes of those that deserved their toes to be smashed. Her board members did not help her much for each one seemed to have had their own personal agenda on board and that was their only interest. This can be checked out by reviewing the agenda items each board member pushed - those that lined their pockets. This job goes to show you that skills are recognized by people in higher places and made a good decision in hiring her. She will love working with the districts in Region 2 because she will be able to identify with her personal education endeavors in areas such as those in Region 2. Just watch and see the area grow and improve. She did it in BISD and she will do it in Region 2. Congratulations, Dr. Z, my respect for you has always been at the top of my list and I congratulate you for the selection - one well-deserved.

Dr. Zendejas is the first woman and Hispanic to have to this position. That is incredible! BISD is not the same without her at the realms. What the board did (let’s not forget Erasmo Castro was in that board- remember in November) was not right. If only teachers, administrators, and staff can have a voice and be in the hiring and firing process of Superintendents. If that were the case, Dr. Zendejas would be still here at BISD. We were a A rated district because of her leadership. She appreciated teachers. I wish her well.
ESPY was Joe Rods enabler. She was not a good Superintendent. Everyone assumes that what was wrong with BISD was either The SPA or ESPY. BOTH WERE BAD FOR BISD.
Don't believe that just because one was bad the other is good. No in this case you had a left over from Joe Rod's regime and the nightmare of The SPA brought back in by the sycophants of her tribe for the perfect STORM of bad management and Selfishness.
Two wrongs did not make a right, it just led to more deception and graft.

The board made a huge mistake and they will not own it. This election's outcome will be based on the the superintendent's performance. Most educators think he deserves a low grade for lack of effort and misfiring of his decisionsq.

What is Joe Rod, Carlos Elizondo, Frankie Olivo, and Erasmo Castro gonna do now that Zendejas is leaving for greener pastures. Those fools were pushing for her to come back even though they know she signed off on a $800,000 check that she paid for a scoreboard without getting Board approval. These guys are the crooks who need to stay away from having anything to with education of children. Carlos, give it up! You are burnt. You are a rat who records his friends in order to blackmail them. People won't forget that.

to 9:11 - did you see the check signed by Dr. Zendejas? Why did the CFO, Joe's friend, run like a chicken when the issue came up? So did the purchasing director. Did the board not approve it after much deliberation? Yes, Joe, and Carlos did figure in there and since Erasmo and Frank saw their reward, they now want to join the team.
Joe and Carlos should have enough pride in themselves to not make fools out of themselves again. Joe, it is time for you to call it quits; you are not able to function anymore except for your expansion of your investment into companies that still sell to BISD. A board policy should exist and be enforce where a board member should disqualify his company from participating in any RFQ's for anything. Abstaining from voting does not help cause the pressure is there to support the board member for a bit of nickels and dimes that are pitched out to them. This has got to stop.

Congratulations because it proves to all of the SPA ganga to realize that if she had been found responsible for any wrong doing, a prestigious organization and Educational Commissioner would not have even considered her for that high
position. In both San Benito and now Corpus, her immediate supervisor has given her high remarks about her intelligence and efforts towards improving the education of our children. That is why it is important to stay atune to the board agendas and the voting records of the board members for that will help you identify the truth as close as possible. You be a witness to the issue so that no one can give you a Mother Goose Story.
