A year ago last November, the City of Brownsville's rumor mill was buzzing with the news that engineering administrator Carlos Lastra was jettisoning his job at the city and headed for greener pastures at Cameron County.
Well, guess who's is back on board?
Would you believe Lastra?
Apparently, the greener pasture wasn't as green as he thought it would be. After all, when he left the city, he was listed on the city's salary schedule making $89,524. After working for the county for about a year, he is said to have been hired back to be in charge of the City's Public Works Drainage system.
You remember Lastra. He had the bright idea of installing plastic yellow speed bumps instead of a concrete curb at 1100 E. Saint Charles Street next to the old Greyhound building.After the yellow bumps were mentioned in local social media, new concrete sidewalk and curbs were installed. installing plastic speed bumps as street curb on St. Charles abutting the old Greyhound terminal. When this came to light, the city's administration ordered them removed and a concrete walk was installed.
Some are saying that he will be there temporary, and later will be given his old job back in the Engineering department where he had been for 17 years.
Cameron County is known as the city employee recycling center. Now we have recycling in reverse.
For ill or bad, former city employees whose horizons have closed at the COB somehow end on the county payroll. The county's Public Works and Engineering departments often end up as the repository for these recycled public employees. Often, they tend to bring their bad habits with them. Has Lastra picked any bad ones besides the ones he had at the county?

This has to be a joke? What's the hell is wrong with the city? People were complaining about the way Charlie Cabler ran the city, now we have the same shit with Bernal. Why wasn't other more capable candidates offered the job furst? Lastra made the decision to leave, and it's not fair for him to get hired back. If he was installing plastic bumps as curbs,what do we expect he'll do in the City drainage management system??? That's the city for you!
I'm sure flooding will get worst, with this clown back! I'm going to have to buy a small boat before it happens! All I know, whoever at HR doing the hiring, is not being fair in their hiring. Others more qualify people should of first been given the opportunity to be hired!

We'll soon see wooden brick streets (again) in the downtown area just to show everybody that this town really is a third world town. That's he's next project.

Bicycle lanes and bike trails rock! Sidewalks aren't plentiful nor wide enough and usually have mailboxes planted on them. We need the bike trails and lanes.
Hopefully the bus shelters would be more plentiful but the bus stops change and the space available in the designated stops can be difficult to build on. Besides bus routes change according to demand. There are still street signs marking bus stops that have been discontinued. Also maybe the City could purchase 100 mini buses that would be able to use the bike lanes.
The detractors just aren't runners, bicyclist or walkers.
If the people who disapprove of the money spent on these possible frivolous or extravagant expenditures aren't convinced of the benefits just read the news.
Runners, walkers and bicyclist get run over by cars at a bigger percentage in other cities while Brownsville has lowered the fatality rates of these type of unfortunate accidents. Bicyclist historically have been getting maimed everywhere even SPI. Be glad that Brownsville is taking the bike and hike trails seriously. 100,000 runners, bicyclist and walkers get injured or worse every year in the USA. Just read the old Brownsville Herald newspaper from over twenty years ago and see the stories of the poor people getting run over.
Count how many use the bike trails here hint not more than 10 per day. Count how many accidents happen here per day hint 100's, count how many runners are running but at all city parks hint 1000's. Count the streets that get flooded when it rains hint almost all, count the porholes here hint millions. GET THE POINT PENDEJO!!!!!
