LAURA BEATS THE RUSH; SWORN AS DISTRICT CLERK NOV. 30

(Ed.'s Note: Incoming Cameron County District Clerk Laura Perez-Reyes beat the rush of newly-elected county and state officials who are usually sworn into office on January 1. Since interim District Clerk Elvira Ortiz was serving the unexpired term of newly-elected former clerk Eric Garza, now Cameron County Sheriff, state law allowed her to take over the office as soon as she was bonded and certified.

Perez-Reyes beat her Republican challenger by some 26,000 votes – 66,353 to 40,281 – in the November 3 general election.

After all the prerequisites and formalities had been filled, 444th District Judge David Sanchez administered the oath November 30 (a Monday) as her kids Nicolas and Sebastian and hubby Alonso look on and one of the kids takes the oath with Mom. She moved into office the next day, Dec. 1.

Before she decided to run for district Clerk, Perez Reyes served a four-year term as a member of the Brownsville Independent School District until Nov. 3, 2020. She was the court coordinator for Judge David Gonzalez Cameron County Court-At-Law No. 3. After her departure, that court's personnel moved up a notch and is now advertising for an opening for court clerk.

Currently Perez-Reyes said she is directing a bit of sprucing up of the office with a new coat of paint.)

I wish her luck now that she is out of one rat hole and into another. I was truly disappointed in her when she missed out on the meeting where the school board was to consider her recommendation to fire Salazar. Both she and Eddie chickened out of the motion and that showed no backbone. I can't help but
wonder why she was so sure of her charges and then all of a sudden she pulls back her motion. What made it worse was that she did not even have the guts
to show up at the meeting and explain her actions.

I hope she didn't jump from one frying pan to another. She must remember that she is now being a role model to her young boys, even imitated when taking the oath and that she remembers this and all the mess at BISD when she considers any action for the good of the citizens. I will be waiting for her to prove herself and maybe make up for her lack of backbone while sitting on BISD board.

Dear 11.26 am, i agree with you no backbone from laurita the former hooter girl, but we all know she like many local politicians are just in it for the money like everyone else, if she had gone along with the firing of salazar then she might be exposed that all this time she was taking campaign contributions from salazar for years, even thought everyone already knows, quiren tapar el sol con un dedo but cant. Wants to be a goody too shoes but cant. Really she along with the rest of the BISD Board needs to be investigate by ???? el pinche crooked cameron DA Luis Shit that we have wont, how about the FBI from San Antonio Texas office?
