MILLIONS FOR UNUSED HIKE-AND-BIKE: HE SHOULD RIDE A BIKE

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

On September,  the city commission – with only commissioner Ben Neece against – voted to approve the issuance of $12,985,246 million in certificates of obligation and refinancing of previous municipal obligations that included a hefty $875,000 toward bike trials.

The motion was made by – appropriately – commissioner Rose Gowen whose historical designation of her home gives her a 100 percent historical exemption and pays no city taxes. The COs will be paid by ad valorem (property) taxes by the rest of the city's taxpayers. Neat, hey? The good doctor just loves splurging money as long as it's not her own. And she is not the only local elected official who's getting a free ride from city taxpayers.

The same day that Gowen got her additional $875,000, local residents had to bear the sweltering sun –  now the northern gales – at "bus stops" without a bench or shelter.

So far, Gowen's claims that the millions she has steered toward her pet project she says will magically improve local residents' health have not made a sizeable dent in the obesity and diabetes levels locally.

This was the justification for the setting aside of 10 percent of all COs issued by the city to go toward the hike-and-bike magical cure-all. And even given the dismal economic times, there are city matches with the Texas Department of transportation and other funding sources that must be paid by city taxpayers.

Then she voted to table the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) budget and proposed that they spend some of their $5 million annual economic development funds for "promotional" gimmicks like T-shirts and "challenges" for people to lose weight. If not, she just might not vote for their budget.

When will this madness end?

Take a gander a the amount of city money that she has steered to her pet project. It is literally millions. And to add insult to injury, one of those trails is to link the city's bike and hike trials to Los Fresnos.
If you look at the newest heist by Gowen and the bike-hike zealots, you will see that the city will use $3.6 million toward our pothole-filled streets all across the city (is there one near you?). The $875,000 is one quarter of that. The other graphics show that this has happened year after year while she has been in office.

Where are this city's priorities?

When will we tear ourselves away from this misguided vision of our city and address those needs and issues that matter to all of us and our quality of life? It's not like Gowen is a svelte picture of fitness.

It doesn't look like she's missed too many meals herself. She pays no city taxes on her home, gets millions to go toward her trails, and then wants to steer even more economic development funds to promote her bikes.

When she was pushing for city funds to be spent on her cyclobias that shut the city down and racked up huge costs for police and city staff to close off streets, she said the trails would bring in millions in "active" tourism from near and far who would spend all kinds of money here to ride on the trials.

Where are they? You and I know that was all smoke.

El Rrun-Rrun, – if we're still around – will provide free advertising to anyone who will rrunrrun against her as long as they promise to do away with this senseless spending by this tax dodger. Enough is enough.

The guy in the top photo may be disabled and only out for a ride, you imbecile!

You are so quick to judge, you drunk!!!!!

No one I know gives a shit about bus shelters. People need to understand that taxpayers pay for bus service and these riders are not taxpayers!!!!!

Anyone who runs against her as At-Large city commissioner will win easily. Her track record of wasteful spending of taxer monies on useless bike lines downtown and ill attended Cylovias for many years are just a few examples. To top it off, pays zero dollars on property taxes on her personal home due to "Historical designation " bullshit. I thought that leaders lead by example, pathetic.

Last week, Christopher Suprun of Dallas, one of the 38 Texas members of the Electoral College, carried through on his plan not to vote for Donald Trump. Suprun, who voted for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, doesn’t think Trump was the best candidate for president this year, even though a majority of Texas voters thought he was.

Texas law doesn’t require electors to back the candidate who got the most popular votes in the state. There is a party pledge to that effect, but no law. So Suprun didn’t vote for Trump. Neither did elector Bill Greene, who voted for former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who is 81 and didn’t run for president this year.

More background: Gov. Greg Abbott thinks electors who vote their conscience, as opposed to how the popular vote goes, should be fined $5,000 and banned for life from the Electoral College. That’s what House Bill 543 by state Rep. John Raney, R-College Station, would do about the curse of elector unfaithfulness.

We are all taxpayers in one sense or another. Some pay by accepting low wages for grunt jobs, jobs that no one else wants.

You must not know no body or you are one of the rich and famous idiotas like your idol commissioner THAT DOES NOT PAY city taxes of any king.
So you never rode the bus when you went to school? Don't say that you drove a cad since you were in elementary! Even idiots that went to those stupid catholic schools most all rode the bus and got picked up at the bridge pinches mojados.
Pinches mojados don't pay taxes and most all ride the city bus. IDIOTA

Agree with Bus Shelters Guy. No one has them standing out there. They seem to be okay with it, from the looks in the photo. Let's use our money for things that benefit everybody!

If she don't get more funding for more bike trails I hear she's going to declare martial law! Military on alert, martial law threat: ‘The craziness is unprecedented’. The bandeja (da mayor) already has his boy scout cap on and the rest are wearing their combat uniforms LOL

Gowen's coke-a-cola- figure (3-liter) shows just how much she uses the bike trial. What is the kickback for that?

Sidewalks aren't plentiful either nor are the ones we have already are wide enough and usually many have mailboxes planted on them. We need the bike trails and lanes.
Hopefully the bus shelters would be more plentiful but the bus stops change and the space available in the designated stops can be difficult to build on. Besides bus routes change according to demand. There are still street signs marking bus stops that have been discontinued. Also maybe the City could purchase 100 mini buses that would be able to use the bike lanes.
The detractors just aren't runners, bicyclist or walkers.
If the people who disapprove of the money spent on these possible frivolous or extravagant expenditures aren't convinced of the benefits just read the news.
Runners, walkers and bicyclist get run over by cars at a bigger percentage in other cities while Brownsville has lowered the fatality rates of these type of unfortunate accidents. Bicyclist historically have been getting maimed everywhere even SPI. Be glad that Brownsville is taking the bike and hike trails seriously. 100,000 runners, bicyclist and walkers get injured or worse every year in the USA. Just read the old Brownsville Herald newspaper from over twenty years ago and see the stories of the poor people getting run over.

Even when a person does not own a home they also pay taxes within the rent that the landlords charge. Part of that money is used to pay taxes. And when I pay my taxes, no one asks permission to use them for bike trails that almost no one uses. They lead to no-where. How many bikes do you actually see running around Brownsville?

Anonymous said...

She needs to go PERIOD. Use this blog for free political ad FREE if anybody wants to run agains this useless spending pendeja...

When was the last time she used the bike trail herself? She could sure use that bike trail (or any other other trail) to lose a couple hundred pounds. She could also invite the city's "health" director, Art "La Marranana Negra" Rodriguez with her. His cholesterol levels are draining the city's health insurance funds by paying for his medications...

The only imbecile here is the one at: 11:18 AM, together with that useless city commissioner. Wasting city funds that are sorely needed to fix problem areas before they become a major disaster.
Maybe her hordes of embeciles will volunteer to help out - Naaaa I don't think so, they can't even ride a bike...bola de babosos

@ 8:15 PM
Nobody that's on government housing pays any property taxes since they don't pay any rent. I pay my property taxes and I also pay for theirs. I also pay for their foods stamps, medical bills, school, etc. Isn't this country great???

Please don't stop spending millions of dollars for the bike and hike trails. I love being the only person using these trails because there is one using them. The other day a COB bike patrol policeman was using the bike and hike trail but it looked like it was not helping him lose weight. I did see a tourist walking on the trail but he was lost, he said, McAllen is nice. And I said, McAllen is nice.

Lay some concrete sidewalks on Boca Chica Blvd pedestrians walking on the streets make it dangerous! Have Arturo Trevino provide us with some bikes once our trail is complete (or can Rosie out do AT?). Un fundraiser at our expense everyone else does it. Our hard earned tax dollars maliciously and intentionally abused by PUB, COB, BISD.....we are the poorest county in the nation and apparently the dumbest! Space X help us you are doing everything right and when you don’t you remedy it. Our leaders learned this from previous leaders it’s insanity at its purest. Man I could’ve used a job at the sheet metal plant but noooo our leaders had their feet up their ass! Liars!

The rich and famouse that live here (ha) has always objected to spend taxes on city improvements but when it comes to bike trails that will benefit NOBODY they don't object. Mind you they are the ones that are fat, diabetic and suffer the most heart attacts. They don't run, they don't walk, they don't use the city tranportation, and MOST OF ALL THEY DON'T PAY ANY TAXES just ask that city commissioner that has spent millions and millions of YOUR taxes... PINCHES IDIOTAS!!!

9:23 a.m. you obviously have not been on Boca Chica for a long time. On the southside from the highway to 4 Corners it is all new sidewalks and drainage system which is why during the last big rain there was no flooding. They are nearly done with 75% of the sidewalks on the northside with the new drainage complete.

So exactly what are you talking about. After 4 Corners is next. Also it is a state highway not a city road.

You trolls just thrive on ignorance

If your favorite city commissioner would do her job there can be high paying jobs here but she is more concern about useless and unused bike trails which drains the city of funding for other necessary projects. PINCHE PENDEJO
