Numerous sightings of former Cameron County District Attorney Armando R. Villalobos, who had been sentenced to 13 years in federal prison for his role in a South Texas bribery and extortion scheme in 2014, have been confirmed.
Sources close to the former DA indicate that he was released from federal prison in Forrest City, Arkansas last Sunday (December 13) and is now serving the rest of his sentence under house arrest at his home in San Benito.
In May, he sought to be released from federal custody under the CARES Act due to high risk of contracting COVID-19 a second time.
Villalobos on April 28 first filed a First Supplemental Emergency Motion for release to home confinement four days after his first motion for release was denied, court documents reflect.
In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen ordered that Villalobos pay $339,000 in restitution, pay a $30,000 fine, and be placed under supervised release for a period of three years after completing his prison term.
“The most important component of an effective justice system is the public’s ability to trust those who are responsible for enforcing the law. But even when there is a breach of that trust, as in this case, the public should take some comfort in knowing that there is a mechanism for detecting, rooting out, and punishing those who would corrupt the process,” stated United States Attorney Robert Pitman.
In May 2013, a federal jury convicted Villalobos of one count of violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, one count of conspiracy to violate the RICO Act, and five counts of extortion. Jurors acquitted Villalobos of two counts of extortion. Hanen granted the defendant’s motion for acquittal on an extortion count (count three) before sentencing.

And as for the rest of the GOP (heretofore to be known as Trumpublicans) who called for secession because the U.S. Supreme Court refused to turn our country into a dictatorship, how does it feel to never again be able to honestly hold your hand over your heart during the "Star-Spangled Banner" or salute the American flag? You forfeited that privilege when you failed your oath to defend the Constitution.
Keep in mind that Villalobos was Carlos Elizondo's attorney from the beginning of the theft issue. Villalobos was in the Cameron County District office when most of the corruption was being planted. He thought former Dist. attorney Yolanda De Leon was no good as district attorney, because she was against the corruption run by convicted former sheriff Conrado Cantu. Well Yolanda De Leon never went to prison nor convicted of wrongdoing. Is Carlos Elizondo the one who spilled the beans on Atkinson, Elia Cornejo Lopez, Carlos Casco, Hinojosa, former district clerk and Cesar De Leon?
