Imagine that dealing with testing for COVID-19 and dispensing the scarce vaccines is something like marriage.
Sometimes you have to do it again and again until you get it right.
That may be the best metaphor for the experience Cameron County has had with their battle with the COVID-19 pandemic. At first, elected officials at all levels played down the seriousness of the infection, only to grudgingly admit that it had spiraled out of control, then moved to implement total and partial business lockdowns, mandatory face mask orders, social distancing and limiting groups to 10 people to thwart the spread.
Then it was disclosed that the county had doled out the vaccines to the public by giving each of the four commissioners and county judge 750 vaccines each to dispense as they saw fit, opening them up to harsh criticisms that they were given out to political supporters, relatives and chosen religious congregations.
The latest vaccination clinic held Friday came after the county handed out vouchers for the vaccine on Thursday. Despite officials' admonitions, some people waited in the pre-dawn hours to assure themselves they would get a prized vaccine voucher.
At each step of the way, residents had to wait for hours in long lines until a Cameron County Health Department worker administered the first dose of the shot at the end of the maze. The second stage, another shot, will be administered after about a month.
Believe it or not, after two or three such vaccine clinics, County Judge Eddie Treviño, and more specifically, the county's health workers seem to be getting it right.
Health department spokespeople said that some 6,000 vaccines were administered at the Los Fresnos Rodeo grounds, with the average wait of about two hours. Toward the end, the five lines moved relatively fast as health workers poked residents while they drove up and sat in their cars.
There are, understandably, some glitches. But Brownsville health care workers and volunteers say that those who are in wheelchairs or are bedbound and live in nursing homes have no way of spending hours at the county’s vaccination clinic to receive their shot. And instead of criticizing Treviño, they have offered some suggestions to address the problem
The Brownsville Herald, for example, reported that at Friday’s vaccine clinic in Los Fresnos, which was only for those 65 years and older, thousands waited in line for hours to receive the vaccine. Some residents who were waiting to receive the vaccine started to feel sick after waiting in their car for hours and had to receive medical services before getting their shot. Some Good Samaritans were seen distributing water bottles to the elderly.
Abraham Barrientes, an administrator at a healthcare service center, philanthropist Mary Yturria and Brownsville resident Jack White said a solution would be to have a time frame for nursing home patients where they would go to the clinic, receive the vaccine and come back.
The told the newspaper that they are worried that the current COVID-19 vaccine clinics are leaving out those who need it the most and have no transportation to attend. Barrientes said a solution would be to have a time frame for nursing home patients where they would go to the clinic, receive the vaccine and come back. They have reached out to Treviño and have made suggestions they hope will address the special needs of this vulnerable group.
“We are proposing for them to establish a time frame that is of course feasible for the employees to transport them, within a certain allocated time. We take the clients that need to be treated and bring them back right away, because obviously the employees we have, have other commitments and can’t be there. What I’ve heard is that you go there at 10 p.m. and get service until 10 a.m. to get the vaccine, they just can’t do that,” Barrientes told the daily.
“The individuals that we serve can’t go, they don’t have the transportation. I went there and saw the conditions, they have to wait in the car for hours and they can’t do that. It is hard to imagine in this day and age that we have people needing transportation, basic things, but we have quite a few that are wheelchair ridden, bedbound, blind and totally depend on us. I understand that it’s a big endeavor that they have to overcome. Meeting the needs of everybody is very difficult.”
“We in no way want to criticize the county. My guess is that their staff is so small and their challenge is so huge that they’re doing all they can,” White said. “We just want to inform and be an advocate for the county, to expand this and to better communicate the resources that need to be there for the people we know are in most need.”
Yturria also told the Herald that she is wheelchair bound and has a staff of five people who takes care of her. She said it would be very difficult to go through all the process of getting the vaccine at the clinic.
“How is the Judge going to know unless somebody tells him?,” Yturria said. “That’s so often the problem.”

White people traveled to a hard hit Latino neighborhood and took many of the Covid-19 vaccine appointments.
It's happening, people.
Kudos to the city of Rancho Viejo in distributing vouchers. City staff and law enfocement did a great job.
LOS FRESNOS did a great job of the Friday clinic. The City of Los Fresnos staff, police and fire department, and all associated departments. The county Health department members also did great work.
The logistics were laid out to maximize movement. The Fire departments new facility accommodated the flow to 5 simultaneous shot stations.

How nice it is to be in a position to be "gentile" and only "suggest" solutions. And have 5 caregivers. Those people are so far removed from reality - yet they are quoted because they have money. Let the PEOPLE speak. I am sure their comments would not pass the censors.
If you critics were not there on Friday to get your vaccine shot, please don't criticize the efforts of the county. My wife and I are in our late 70's with many ailments and we struck out twice in prior weeks waiting in line to get vouchers. However we decided to go earlier to get vouchers at the County Warehouse on Browne Ave at 4 a.m. and it worked. The lines opened at 7 am instead of 8 am and we got our voucher and were home by 7:45. The process was fast and smooth. We did the same thing for the shot at Los Fresnos, arriving there at 3 am. Believe me, it's hard to do but we decided to make a sacrifice. The lines open up at 6 am promptly and once again we were back in Brownsville by 7:45. It isn't until the sun comes out and you are departing the area that you realize what an enormous and hugh event this was. Hundreds of cars in the wait areas, recovery areas, lines on hwy 100 and paredes line road being guided in an orderly manner by law enforcement officers and volunteers. All workers, technicians and helpers were doing their assigned duties honorably. One worker told me he had been there since 5 pm the day before and he still had a smile on his face. I know the county judge and commissioners have been criticized quite a bit and perhaps they deserved it. But to organize an event of this magnitude and pull it off in such a smooth manner deserves recognition. Their efforts are deeply appreicated. We were given a return date of Feb. 26 and once again my wife and I are ready.
Treviño has never been a nursing home it appears. I have. You have many residents who can only be moved to go to the hospital for care. These people cannot be safely transported to an inoculation center. All over the US staff were sent to nursing homes. The incompetence of this county will never end.

This vaccine fiasco has proven that the county judge and commissioners are not capable of running a county. Their true colors have come shining through.
It also shows how little they think about the people they serve. Extremely unsanitary conditions at the sports park and the Los Fresnos Rodeo. Is the Jacob Brown Auditorium or the Brownsville convention center too good of a place for the elderly citizens? Seems that they don't deserve appropriate toileting facilities. They deserve porto pottys. Too greedy and uncompassionate to provide drinking water. Shame on them.
Brownsville is called a third world country by Jerry Mchale. Well Jerry, your friend Joey and the Judge created this third world COUNTY. No vision, lack of motivation and absolute lack of empathy for those in most need of services. Its as simple as investing in online signup and telephone portals. Scheduling appointments, so people do not have to wait in line for hours. These dishonest, unintelligent, ignorant, ineffectual, purposeless, unsympathetic, feebleminded people have no business running Cameron County. But then again they are all narcissists with great lack of compassion for their fellow man/woman.
"How is the Judge going to know unless somebody tells him?" Yturria said. "That's often the problem."
Finally somebody is stepping up to the plate. The overall opinion of the people attending the vaccine clinic this past Friday was that the County was better organized in issuing the vaccine and the clinic was more successful. There are things that the County can improve in doing so but any assistance can all so be helpful. Therefore, be the Cesar Chavez of Brownsville and help lead our community leader in serving our community. Don't be a Bobby and think that every individual in this County is an incompetent and only he can solve the problems.
Whoever criticized the comments made by Mrs. Mary Yturria surely, does not know the fine lady. She is trying to help with a solution instead of adding to the problem. She is comparing that even with 5 caregivers, she has problems in getting the vaccine, so she can only imagine the trouble that some less fortunate people have to go through. Give her some time, and I bet she will, at her mature age, come out with a solution instead of cutting down people who are trying to solve the problem.
Kudos to Mrs. Yturria for always being a simple, and lovely lady who will always go out of her way to help others. I bet if a clinic was set in the Rio Viejo neighborhood at her home, she would allow the drive through at her home and have people line up around the Jacaranda and Cenizo streets in the area.
@ 1:45 - It is not about competence - it is about wanting to get it done right. You may believe Eddie Trevino does not know how to contact the nursing homes and organize this for them, But I believe he does,. You may believe Eddie and others had no idea how to contact the specialists to insure the most at risk go first, I do. This problem is you think so low of Eddie's competency. He just got caught playing politics with the vaccine to allow the commissioners to obtain political capital. Now that 6,000 people were able to get the vaccine in a more equitable way we are to forget what he did?
I have put ideas on the table and not just criticized. These are ideas being used all over the country.
I am happy for everyone who was able to access this better organized event. But it still does not change the facts of what happened before they were caught.
And I do believe Eddie is more than competent to have done this right from day one, but that was not his goal and that is the problem.
Bobby WC
"Snort" I sat to 1:48 pm - The Rio Viejo hood would never allow a drive-thru clinic - they do not even allow trucks to drive thru and the cops stop and question anybody who is not a resident of their fabled streets. Get real, 1:48 pm.
So when are they going to distribute vouchers in the southmost area? never according the city and county commissioners. Why? they are NOT rich and famous, thas why want more? YOU PIOJOS DON'T VOTE - NO VOTE NO VOUCHERS IDIOTAS...
and besides ya all didn't go to st joe...
Tell her to infect the resacas again with those stupid weeds from africa GRACIAS it just cost the city millions to clean that shit up!!!

To the idiota @4:39, vouchers were distributed at the county warehouse on Browne Ave which leads to dockberry road and then straight to Southmost Rd. I live on west st. francis st. and I drove all the way to the opposite side of town at 5 am in my 2001 chevy and got my voucher. The people in the Southmost area were a lot closer than I was. So get your facts straight before you start making your stupid remarks which nobody gives a damn about. Idiota.
"Treviño has never been a nursing home it appears. I have." BWC at 12:06 p.m.
You are absolutely correct Bobby when you stated that "The incompetence of this county will never end." You are a proven fact to that statement. How can Trevino be a nursing home? You wasted your money at UTEP if this is what you learned at this University. Para pendejo no se estudia.
How many other Commissioners received vouchers?? Who can find out where those vouchers went. Judge Eddie Trevino and Joey Lopez are self serving disgraceful politicians. No wonder Brownsville never advances. Mayor Trey Mendez is silent now.
There is no reason that Assisted Living, and Nursing Homes should not have priority for the Vaccine distribution.
But there is no reason why just because someone is poor that they deserve priority over someone who may not be poor. This is nothing more than class warfare that Democrats use all the time. Stop rewarding people for being poor, otherwise they will continue to stay poor. Just look around if you do not see poverty all around you are blinded by your own prejudice.
Eddie Trevino sure does know how to contact the nursing homes, BLIMP! He contacts them for their vote when he is running..... so do all the other selfish, clueless commissioners..... but for the vaccines, ni madre.
St luke brownsville got 100 vouchers last week
