CASTILLO: OLD? NO CAR? TOUGH! IT'S FEDS', NOT MY PROBLEM

(For months now we've pointed out that the City of Brownsville's response to the testing for COVID-19 and the administering of the vaccine have been total failures. Foremost is the ignoring that many low-income elderly have no transportation, don't have the time to wait for hours in line, and that no public transit has been made available to them to get the needed testing and life-saving vaccine. The answer from Dr. James Castillo, Cameron County’s Health Authority, has been a shrug of his shoulders and a shifting of the blame to federal authorities. He neglects to say that he – as the county's medical authority –  didn't order bar closures until one day after the New Year's bash and is expected to lift the order Feb. 5. Why blame the holiday surge on residents when they have opened the doors to bars and dance halls that ignore Castillo's and Cameron County Judge Eddie TreviƱo's lamentations that they should heed their call to take necessary precautions?)

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Some seniors are having trouble finding transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“I want to get the vaccine administered for the well-being of the world and the children,” said Maria De Jesus a Brownsville resident.

Garcia, a senior with chronic health conditions, has been trying to get the COVID-19 vaccine but is facing challenges with transportation.

“How are people going to do it, those of us who do not have cars. I’ve tried to pay for transportation but no one is willing to take me,” said Garcia.

She said many transportation services aren’t willing to take her because of the long wait times. Even Garcia’s health caregiver said she’s not allowed to take her to get the vaccine.

“What about the people at home that can’t go nowhere or that don’t have a way to be transported, I think they should come and vaccinate them at their houses, I think that would be logical,” said Luz Espinosa, Garcia’s Caregiver.

Garcia and many other senior residents who cannot wait hours in line are in desperate need of answers.

KVEO spoke to health officials who say the vaccine cannot be administered at home.

“The two vaccines that are being given cannot be done in a person’s home the person has to be observed for 15 minutes,” said Dr. James Castillo, Cameron County’s Health Authority.

Dr. Castillo said there is not much that can be done at the local level until healthcare providers and pharmacies get access to the vaccines.

“The vaccine is supposed to be available at every pharmacy and at every doctor’s office that’s what it’s supposed to be but with issues with production and how the federal government is distributing, all of that is causing these allocation issues,” said Dr. Castillo.

He suggests those most at risk stay home until the federal government issues an in-depth plan to administer the vaccine to those with transportation issues.

Garcia is hoping the government will act quickly as she and thousands of others are eager to get the vaccine.

No one has time for the elderly in this fucking heartless town.

But Joey Lopez had his favorites for those county vouchers he handed out to his pals, including the bigot El Paya Jerry McHale.

What public service. Joey Lopez defines it his way.....y ya!

Shame on you, Joey!

Juan, your issue with the County on the procedures being implemented for distribution of the vaccine is a total concern of this community regarding low-income elderly with no means of transportation. There is no doubt that the current procedures have failed to provide the necessary services for our beloved elderly people of our community. In fact, even those elderly people that were fortunate to have transportation to receive the vaccine suffered the experience of long wait time with no bathroom facilities available to them. Therefore, why am I writing to you something that you already know and have written articles about. Perhaps, the solution is not about complaining what our community leaders are doing but expressing to them ideas on how to solve the problem facing them in trying to serve the community. As a member of our community you have always been in the lead to help our community leader improve our beloved community. Give them some ideas on how to do it or ask your fellow readers to contribute to the solution to the problem facing our community. It is time for Brownsville to step up and do something worthwhile to make this community the best place to live in this country and provide the appropriate services to all of its citizens. This is not only a challenge to you but a challenge to all the people in Brownsville including all the bloggers (Jerry, Bobby, Diego, and others).

I have an 88 yr old relative that is definite candidate for the vaccine. I called the Health Department (Cameron County) that is when the vaccines were given with voucher on a Thursday and with no voucher on a Friday. I was NOT informed until late, I found out on FB about the voucher one, then I called for the Friday one and the person that I talked to said I needed to go park that Thursday afternoon by 4 pm. I was supposed to sit in my car with an 88 yr old person all night, then I told the person, I was not 65 yrs old, but I do have asthma, I use a machine inhaler daily with embuterol. I was told to request a letter from my Dr. and to take the machine and the medication with me, otherwise I would not be allowed to take the vaccine. I told the person, I could take all of that with me, but I DONT LIVE IN A BANANA REPUBLIC, I am a citizen of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA, so is the 88 yr old relative . It upsets me that people like Mr. McHale and other "known" locals do such things as skip the line, if and when it concerns THEIR benefit, they put PERSONAL interest first; it throws back the stone to them; the next time one of these people say something about others locally, let us not forget when and how they showed us who they really are. I told the person from the Health Dept I would keep taking care of myself and my family member and just wait until the vaccine is available @ CVS or Walgreens. I am really hoping for the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. That vaccine is only ONE dose, reminder to those that need the second dose, I hope the city is nice enough to give you the second dose, until, then, you are NOT INMUNE.

As a 78 yr old with heart disease and COPD, I do have a car, but still there were younger people jumping the line in Los Fresos. No regard for seniors in Cameron.

Stupid ass Trump just came to the valley to sign the stupid ass border wall when his stupid ass Trump supporters were climbing the Capitol walls. He should have brought some vaccines to the much needed valley. Glad he's out and hope he gets impeached.

Get it right Castillo, it's not the FEDERAL government, it's your greedy local government. But since you and your whole local health care department has already gotten the vaccine, who gives a shit. South Texas greedy so call political leader are the ones calling the shots as to who is to get them and how to charge for the vaccines. How much did you Castillo pay for the vaccine? Did you use your Medicare insurance or was it a freeby or a curiosity? Would you Castillo do it as a curiosity or for a price?

Anonymous said...

Castillo check your local pharmacies, they got the vaccine, but they gave it to their immediate family members and friends. Check Salinas pharmacy and see how he made sure he called all his immediate family and friends and gave them the vaccine. Greed is what your so called local pharmacies are doing and will continue to do so, because they can and are allowed. In the mean time tell your local county judge Trevino, that the decision to chose who is allowed to get the vaccine is NOT his, but should be from a medical professional. This is an example that has a precedent, our so called Vice President Kamala said she would not take the vaccine if then President Trump ordered it, but she would take it if Dr. Fakhri would tell her to. Meaning Trump was not a medial expert, but Dr. Fakhri was. This Trevino guy has been running the Cameron County corrupt rodeo too long.

You have to have a special permit, given by the City of Brownsville and your doctor, to be transported from your home to the clinic/doctor !!!

So not all the elderly can use the BUS.

To get the permit: you have to answer tons of questions, take pictures of your shoes, walkers, etc.
