What started off as whispered complaints against newly-elected Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza even before his swearing in on January 1 have turned into calls for the county commissioners court and District Attorney's Office to step in and address alleged illegal acts by the sheriff and his apparent chief-deputy-to-be Robert Gracia. Gracia, who had been rumored during Garza's campaign to be named
as the successor to the chief deputy position just below the sheriff formerly occupied by Gus Reyna, on Dec. 30 started issuing orders using the county's email system to issue orders to all department personnel.
Among those orders were requiring all sheriff departments – whether they were on duty or not – to attend three swearing in ceremonies in full uniform, required two sets of keys to the administration building, and to fill out a packet providing personal information on all department employees.
The ceremonies will be scheduled as follows:
1. 12:00 a.m., Friday, January 1, 2021
- Ceremony will be held outside in the parking area behind the Administration Building.
- All deputies who started their shift at 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2020 will be required to attend.
- All Sergeants, Lieutenants, and Captains with the Department must also be in attendance.
2. 7:00 a.m., Friday, January 1, 2021
- Ceremony will be held outside in front of the Administration Building.
- All Deputies who start their shift at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, January 1, 2021 and those Deputies who are off must attend.
- Deputies who would have normally worked the 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. shift which began on Thursday, December 31, 2020 but were off must be in attendance.
- The Jail Transport Division must attend.
3. 8:00 a.m., Friday, January 1, 2021
- Ceremony will be held outside in front of the Administration Building.
- CID Olmito and CID Harlingen must be in attendance, including those who are off.

- Ceremony will be held outside in front of the Administration Building.

The "packet" that was referenced in Gracia's missive was a 34-page employment application form that he required of all department employees and which included personal and confidential information including Social Security numbers, a personal history, criminal record, education records, and certified copies of birth certificates, citizenship naturalization documents, etc.
Sheriff Dept. personnel, believing that Gracia had already been named chief deputy complied. The form states that "Any candidate submitting an incomplete application WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT. The application will be evaluated on completeness and neatness." But as the commissioners court found out a few days after the complaints started to mount, the county's Human Resources Office informed them that Gracia was not a county employee and had no authority issuing orders, to have access to personnel confidential information, or to view sensitive case files or undercover and criminal investigations.
In fact, his name was not among the eight individuals who had applied for the chief deputy position before it closed after seven day a week ago Thursday. And if it had been, he would have been disqualified because the job description called for Texas Commission On Law Enforcement (T-COLE) certification and he does not have it. Gracia retired from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration before heading Garza's campaign for sheriff and was one of his most generous campaign contributors.
Moreover, they claim that any personnel transfers, demotions, etc., Gracia ordered had no legal standing or authority. The association has also brought the apparent anomaly to the attention of County Judge Eddie Treviño, the commissioners court, the county's HR Department, County Supervisor Pete Sepulveda, and the Cameron County District Attorney's Office.
This coming Tuesday the commissioners court will have the county's civil legal division apprise them of the matter. Will they call on Garza to toe the legal line? Or will they let things fester and fuel the mounting insurrection against the new sheriff in town?

He would set free the criminal and would later be compensated. Wonder if the FBI is getting close? Life is a bitch when you get caught with your pants down to your knees. Justice for the denied victims is near.

Moral is high at the Sheriff's Office. Majority of employees are happy that fairness is equal. Respect to Sheriff Eric Garza.
Sheriff Garza continue to make a difference. The anonymous complaining are probably directed by Javier Reyna and his favorites that were privileged. We elected them out for a reason. Nepotism, favoritism, and injustices will no longer prevail.

I'm a reporter for a news channel in the RGV,this weekend I called Sheriff Garza in regards to two different cases, I called,no answer, I contacted the office and I was directed to his PIO, no idea who that is, we never had that problem with the previous administration.
Isn't against the law to hire people who donated and helped you during your campaign?
You guys complain over nothing, I worked for him when he was a district clerk, he was always late, drunk, a complete mess! he always harassed the cute girls, one time he went to a conference and he took the one the girls.
Well, on the middle of the night he tried to enter her room, she quit after that... you guys are for a long ride.. but dont you worry he will fuck up again...
A high ranking gulf cartel member gave Gracia 70k in cash for Eric's campaign... believe me, Gracia will continue to run the Sheriff's Office behind scenes.
Out of vengeance, Garza sent a patrol supervisor to work as jailer, now that shift of 20 deputies is running without supervision, this saturday those deputies arrested a guy on some fucked up charges and he ended up getting assaulted by jailers...they tried to call the shift supervisor but there is none... LIABILITY!

The Sergeant that was sent to the jail voluntarily resigned because according to him “it was beneath him” to work in the jail. It’s not a big loss to the sheriffs office. He was a less than stellar employee. He was only promoted as a reward for turning information on former Captain Carlos Garza, who happens to be the uncle to his common law wife. Funny how he wasn’t persecuted for assisting the former Captain in all of his off-duty endeavors. I guess the former administration chose what laws they wanted to enforce. That, along with his contributions to both Lucio and Reyna’s unsuccessful campaigns. The former sergeant was a carbon copy of Reyna’s dictator-like leadership. Not an original thought in his head. He’ll end up at another agency where he will once again do the bare minimum and continue to do his “transas.”
How does this supervisors with 20+ years of experience let this Gracia guy boss them around?

You must be the so called "Sheriff" or one of his cronies. You don't send a Sgt. from the SO Division to the Jail Division without proper training. Come on aren't you the one that during your campaign kept saying that the SO and Jail needed "Training".

I'm so ashamed that I voted for you. Regardless if these current employees supported and had loyalty to Sheriff Lucio. He earned it. It's a obvious that current employees need to support the sheriff during a race.
You are a prime example... with your actions. Those that didn't support you; you are giving them a hard time, moving them around to positions that they are not trained, you are screaming at clerks, having them hire people and not following the hiring process. You are hiring people on the spot without filling out proper applications, you want people to kiss your ass. Why?? because they didn't support you.
