I have been watching the Senate impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump and am struck by the absolute political blindfolds of the Republican members of that august body.
By a vote of 57 to 43, they acquitted the demagogue and a past president who has blood on his hands. They now have it on theirs. Liberty and Freedom died today.
The senators, by their refusal to meet their constitutional obligation, have created a new protected class: angry white people. The 43 senators have sent the message and the protected class across the land has got it loud and clear. If you're an angry white person, you can do no wrong.And if you're an angry losing president, you can – as he said – walk down Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and get away with it. Or incite your angry supporters to go and kill.
The Republicans, who call themselves the Party of Lincoln, have shown themselves to be slaves to the Trump base and ignored the facts that have been paraded before their eyes. They have refused to acknowledge that Trump incited a mob of right-wing extremists who killed and defiled the people's house at his urging and prompting.
Instead, with an eye toward gleaning any dividend or scrap of political advantage from Trump's base in upcoming elections, Republican senators turned a blind eye to the crass violation of his oath of office – nay, his promise to the American people – that resulted in the death of our fellow Americans, the violent physical assault of law enforcement officers by a crazed throng of thugs and the desecration and defilement of the Capitol the foundation of our freedoms and values.
One by one they stood and – in the same place where the insurrectionists sauntered and spat on on our democratic system – said they were satisfied with the actions of the demagogue cum tyrant.
These are the same senators who had to be protected by the capitol police at the risk of their very lives. And some gave those very lives for their protection These are the same senators who cowered from the Trump-incited mob while brave and honest law enforcement men and women protected them from the mob.
Is this the Party of Lincoln? A pox on their house and their descendants who carry this cowardice gene and who – instead of standing up for their country – groveled at the feet of a tyrant.
What country do we live in? Is it the same one that these people live?
Before the vote was taken, then defense team gave Republicans a thumbs up. But it wasn't the legal prowess of the lawyers that carried the day. The 43 senators who voted against conviction pandered to the most base political instincts and that vote will follow them for the rest for their lives.
And this republic is the poorer for it.

The answer appears to be unequivocal: Not only would he be convicted and banned from office for the rest of his wretched existence as long he remained a U.S. citizen, but the verdict committing him to that fate would be unanimous.

Several groups broke from the GOP and walked out during the 2016 RNC nomination when it appeared Trump would be the nominee. They warned it would be a disastrous mistake to nominate Trump, they warned he was unfit and the party might never recover. They were right. But rather than admit the mistake, the GOP has gone gutless, trembling and afraid of their own creation, a man-baby they crowned.
No one in good conscience can support the GOP anymore. This isn't team sports, this is an absolute dereliction of duty and there is no two sides to it.
