DOES MEXICAN DESCENT, ACCENT, DISQUALIFY ONE FROM OFFICE?

We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you'll do...

(Ed.'s note: We were surprised, but not amazed, when we saw this graphic in a local blog.

Y pa acabarla de chingar it was written by gabacho blogger Jerry Mchale, a California transplant.

Bordering on anti-Mexican prejudice based on mastery or non-mastery of the English language, among other things we're sure, the graphic and a fawning post that followed ridiculing businessman Pedro Cardenas and praising incumbent District 4 commissioner Ben Neece heap undeserved scorn on city commission candidate Cardenas.

Neece, we're sure, probably had nothing to do with this ugly affair. He has shown more than once that he treasures the Hispanic part of his heritage (Hinojosas.)

Living as we do, on an international border, bilingualism to some degree probably makes us speak with a different tinge of culture depending on our upbringing.

And just as English dominant speakers can ridicule those who are Spanish dominant, it also works the other way around. Growing up on the border, we have hewn out a degree of tolerance among most people here. Bilingualism is not easy. And there are precious few people who can call themselves true bilinguals.

This Cardenas, by the way, is the son of Alfonso "Poncho"  Cardenas and graduated from St. Joseph Academy before going on to get a college degree. It's safe to assume he knows his way around English.

Spanish speakers encourage English monolinguals when they try to speak Spanish because they see that the person is making an honest and good-faith effort to learn the language. And go to any business in the city and bilingualism – to any degree – is a prized quality.

To ridicule someone, anyone, for attempting to communicate in another language, is inane and mean spirited.

Now, apparently, there is a requirement for city candidates – especially those of Mexican descent like Mr. Cardenas. - who, upon pain of ridicule and of being painted as a caricature of a dirty, uncouth Mexican - has been disqualified as a candidate for the city of Brownsville by the blogger.

"It's not too cool to be ridiculed
But you brought this upon yourself..."

It hasn't been that long that he arrived at our city and struggled to make himself understood by local Hispanics  and was embraced here and in Matamoros. Now he's questioning their worth because they don't have the English eloquence he believes they should?

Most recent arrivals here think that mastering a "chinga tu madre" or "cabron" or two endears one to the locals. It does not. Locals just humor them.

But while Jerry might have picked up a few phrases and slang bad words to spice up his copy, he hasn't mastered basic respect.

Y es falta de respeto to ridicule people who speaks with some sort of accent.

As a businessman in our city, he is providing jobs and a livelyhood for our neighbors. In filing for office and offering to represent local residents, how has that offended Mchale? For that alone he deserves respect. What does Jerry provide?

North of Sarita we all have accents. South of Sarita they all have accents. Our parents, those who try to speak English, shouldn't be ridiculed for trying to speak it.

What happened to cultural tolerance? Below is a list of local and national figures who have some sort of accent. Should they have been disqualified and rejected for public service?

Most local Hispanic residents trying to talk formal Spanish
Most local Anglos trying to talk any Spanish at all
Most city commissioners trying to speak formal Spanish
Some city commissioners trying to speak articulate English
Most local Indian business people
Most local Korean business people
Most Filipino, Asian and Indian medical professionals
Local Jewish residents from European countries who escaped the Holocaust
Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger
National Security Advisor Zybgnew Brezinsky
Dr. Eperanza Zendejas, BISD Superintendent
TSC President, businesswoman, Adela Garza
John and Robert Kennedy, President, U.S. Attorney General
Every U.N. Secretary-General
Retired ESL school teacher Jerry Mchale trying to chat in Spanish

And we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Tellin' how you are gonna change right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
You haven't done nothin')

Everyone knows McHale is the worst type white supremacist. He thinks only he can save us. Meanwhile he takes money from every corrupt politician to keep the corruption going which keeps us down.

Agree with @10:29

El Paya not the Jerry of old. He's gone to the other side and thinks a few postings against Trump will keep everybody fooled. He is one of them. He seems embittered, maybe because his Mexican wives threw his ass out.

Did anyone who watched the impeachment trials notice the whole Congress pledging alligance? Did you hear them repeat, "I pledge of allegiance" instead of I pledge allegiance? Bola de burros! And Jerry was faking it as an ESL teacher who sat at his chair with his feet on the desk and gave the kids busy work with no guidance. Oh and he also worked on his yearly lessons plans while we were all involved in a professional development session, and would sign in and walk out during the break. I was glad when we got an adminisrator who would have us sign in and sign out and he got caught.

Why did he marry a Mexican? Are his children not "halfers?"
