BROWNTOWN RANKED NO. 12 MOST MISERABLE U.S. CITY

(Plasma sellers from Mexico cross 13th Street to line up at the CSL plasma center as the homeless huddle in the doorway of the boarded up Casa del Nylon which the city purchased for an inflated $2.3 million in 2011. A decade later, it has become a magnet for vagrants and the homeless. Downtown Brownsville has become a preferred destination for desperate people from the other side of the Rio Grande and a growing homeless population from all over.)

These cities have things in common – few opportunities, devastation from natural disasters, high crime and addiction rates, and often many abandoned houses.

Not the worst, just the most miserable.

We've identified the 50 most miserable cities in the US, using census data from 1,000 cities, taking into consideration population change (because if people are leaving it's usually for a good reason), the percentage of people working, median household incomes, the percentage of people without healthcare, median commute times, and the number of people living in poverty.

The most miserable city in the US is Gary, Indiana.
The state with the most miserable cities is California, with 10. New Jersey is close behind, with nine, and Florida comes in third, with six. Below we list the most miserable cities in Texas.

Port Arthur: 2
Port Arthur, a city surrounded by oil refineries, has 55,000 residents. Fifty-three percent are working, and 30% are living in poverty.

The city was hit by hurricanes in 2005, 2008, and 2017. Harvey, the latest, caused $1.3 billion in damage. Officials fear that if people keep leaving, Port Arthur will fall below 50,000 people and make it ineligible for federal grants.

Brownsville: 12
Brownsville has 183,000 residents, 56% of people are working, and more than 31% of people are living in poverty. More than 35% don't have health insurance.

The city is on the Mexican border and is often a crossing for immigrants who entered the country illegally, making it one of the most patrolled places in the country. According to locals, three kinds of helicopters fly overhead. Concern around immigration has also made it difficult for some to sell their properties.

Huntsville: 20
Huntsville has 41,500 residents; 39% of its people are working, and almost 35% live in poverty. The low employment, however, is in part because those living in prisons are counted in the city's population.

The Department of Criminal Justice is the city's biggest employer, providing nearly 7,000 jobs. Since 1999, Texas executions have been done exclusively out of Huntsville.

Harlingen: 39
Harlingen has 65,000 residents; 56% are working, and 30% live in poverty. It is a hot city, with little rainfall. though recently it has been dealing with flooding. It's also one of three cities where 2,000 immigrants were released in 2019, putting pressure on the city to help them.

Pasadena, Texas: 48
Pasadena has 153,000 people, 65% of whom are working, and one-fifth live in poverty. While the median income is $50,207, nearly 29% of people don't have health insurance.

Mostly working-class, the city is based near petrochemical plants and is known for its race issues. It used to be home to the Texas headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan. Now, it's divided. In the north it's primarily made up of Latino people and to the south it's mostly white people.

No surprise there. Brownsville's indigenous population is scorned across the state. Welfare and joblessness abound. Plus adopting the Border Lifestyle wholehog renders the city a veritable pigsty.

Sad it has never improved. Shame of The Valley.

Downtown vagrants? Another one that lands on Downtown Commissioner Ben Neece's lap!

What's he done about it in the last 4 years? Reelection?

Pos no. Como?

BUSCO CAMIONETA USADA: Modelo Ford o Chevy, como del 2015. Nada mas viejo. Soy mecanico de primera y puedo hacer mis propias reparaciones. Titulo necesario. Yo sabre si la camioneta es sobreviviente de inundacion (Hurricane Harvey) o si ha sido chocada. No chinguen. Pago en efectivo, hasta $2,000. Prefiero comprar de Mejicano honesto, no Gringo jambon.

Gracias a Dios, we don't have Gringo leadership any more, so we can have true Mexican misery.

Racist Republican comes clean -

GOP Sen. Ron Johnson says Capitol rioters didn’t scare him, but might have had they been Black Lives Matter protesters.

No suprise. Look at who represents the City and those that have been voting for them for the past 20 years. Now no one will run for city office that has any credibility or stature. Misery loves company.

I was asked if I am a socialist by a stupid Republican. I said I believed in the idea of a government helping its people. I do not mean solely by welfare, but by making sure all citizens have the same opportunity to succeed.

The U.S. does not tale car of its own - we're 35th in the world in infant mortality now. US keeps getting worse and worse every single year.

That means 34 other countries take better care of their young than we do.

A little socialism (the Airlines are really into it, btw, with all the federal aid they get so-routinely) wouldn't hurt at this point in our evolution. Help at home, then help abroad (foreign aid: $3 billion to Israel, 444 million to Mexico).

Republicans have confused the word, purposely misinterpreted it. Sad.

Brownsville reminds me of the saying that you can wake a person who is sleeping but you cannot wake a person who pretends to be sleeping.

Suffer again.

All people that say horrible things about Brownsville, should go to Harlingen or Mcallen. Better, move out of the RGV. Those of us that stay, instead of kissing the ring of the masters, kick them out, bring companies and jobs that do not benefit politicians pockets but help the common citizen. Young people, stay and get involved in your city, you will want to return some day and you will want better conditions. I will take Brownsville, Texas any time over cities up north with discrimination, high pay but also high crime and high rents. Miserable is spelled the same in Spanish but the meaning changes. Miserable in English has a connotation of poor, in Spanish it means mean. We have never been mean, we have been called stupid by Brownsville haters. Worse thing is that those Brownsville haters are willing to hate but not willing to go after the system causing problems in our local municipality because a lot of times those people are their friends.

To many Shitty gready politicians with no vision or leadership skills just the same ol alumni supporters of St Joseph mafia stealing from the poor.Just look at these so called leaders did to PUB!FKING dirt bags.

Yep, typical Harlingen opening its doors to illegal immigrants carrying all kinds of diseases. The capital of the valley is all about the dollar and of course channeled to very certain pockets. The same city that has city manager with only a high school education BUT has a master' electrician license, giving him the credentials for the job. I don't think that he has done an electrician job in years. He got the job only because he is a good "yes man," and a bully!
We can thank that " old POS fart" in Washington for allowing the diseased to enter our country and spread the virus among other things. So, being ranked 39 is a hell of a lot better than Brownsville.

Love it or leave it and quit bitching about it and do something. Un taco con una cerverza should not be the sole purpose of electing one person to a position that will determine the improvement of the city. I do agree that we need to show our youth a good reason why they should return to their birth city. Look at how many of them are now involved in Washington, trying to make some changes. Those kids should be featured in the Herald and applauded for their tenecity and fortitude. Do not generalize; Brownsville's reputation is due to certain local politicians who could care less. Their concern is to line their pockets since they know that the local law enforcers are right in there with them for a couple of bucks.

Way to go Trey and company! Still butthurt when you get compared to those other cities by reporters? That's cause they are kicking your ass amigo!

BREAKING NEWS:
Felix "El Chapo" Sauceda rehired Officer Rey Rios after he was terminated for a DWI accident and pursuit with DPS..and now is in the process of Rehiring Officer Diane Martinez after she was released from the de after several thefts from local department stores. BUT IN Brown town anything is possible if your price is right and it woul be the first time Felix "El Chapo" Sauceda has done this before starting with an Officer that was involved in a DWI accident that was released by the previous administration then rehired by El Chapo and given a promotion to Sergeant.
Then rehiring a Lieutenant and Sergeant that were both terminated for being liars.
Then rehired by El Chapo Sauceda and given promotions the Lieutenant to head the Training division and the Sergeant to the Narcotics division. The Sergeant was then moved again from the Narcotics unit after he was caught lying on Criminal Cases...Corruption and Liars is what this Chief Felix "El Chapo" Sauceda will be known for...#worstchiefever..

Hey Don't forget that Felix "El Chapo" Sauceda also covered up for a Swat Lieutenant that was involved in a on duty sex scandal with a civilian employee in which Chief Felix "El Chapo" Sauceda forced the female to resign and just moved the Lieutenant to the Patrol Division with no disciplinary action..With the Blessing of City Manager "El Rata" Bernal..

I think you missed another one; The president of the Brownsville Police Officers Association was also involved with a individual that was arrested by the Fed's for having terrorism ties. Then Felix "El Chapo" Sauceda gave the Union President a promotion and a position with absolutely nothing to do, the only requirement is to not fight as the Chief steals from the Officers.
Make no mistake Felix "El Chapo" Sauceda and City Manager El Rata Bernal are filling their pockets with $$$$!!

Vagrants all over the City of Brownsville..I much rather go to Harlingen or McAllen where I feel much safer..lots of Police are seen in those city's.

Well I saw it first hand, a huge fight in the parking lot of the Sunrise Mall in Brownsville. While my family was at the carnival. Of course we called The police and after forever a Police car arrived. We were upset and we talked to the Officer who never got out of his car and he told us they were extremely busy and short on personnel!
After speaking with several friends that live in Brownsville, they told me about this blog as I was ready to file a complaint with the Police Department. But as I read some of these articles I can see they have way bigger problems and it's probably the reason Brownsville is Unsafe!!!
