SHERIFF JOBS TO HIGHEST BIDDER, CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTORS

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

First there was Robert Gracia, one of the two main contributors to new Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza's campaign who was tabbed to be chief deputy even though he wasn't a state certified peace officer.

Gracia – a retired Drug Enforcement Agency veteran – came in guns blazing even before Garza was sworn in ordering sheriff department personnel to attend the swearing in and to reapply for their jobs on pain of termination.

He took over the position even though he wasn't one of the eight applicants for the chief deputy advertised slot.
After three months and various attempts at passing the Texas Commission On Law Enforcement (T-COLE), he did and is now Garza's right-hand man. He is now listed as chief deputy at $86,020, a handsome profit for his investment.

But even before he passed the test, he had

authorized transfers in personnel from various divisions and implemented policies that seemed to some supporters of the previous sheriff they were retaliatory.

He figures prominently in two lawsuits in federal court, one of them for allegedly violating the First Amendment rights of former sheriff Omar Lucio supporter and subjecting him to demeaning and humiliating chores below less qualified personnel.

Then, after getting the commissioners court to approve an office administrator's job and two clerks, Garza announced that his former deputy at the district clerk's office Ricardo Cornejo was getting the job, a day before the application period for the position had expired and without any interviews conducted. Cornejo, who campaigned heavily for Garza, is now listed at the department at a $48,470 salary.

Were those Sheriff Department positions for sale?, people ask.

Qualifications don't seem to matter. What matters is if you helped in his campaign or donated money. Instead, for example, of promoting secretaries that have been there for years and years at lower paying positions, he is hiring the people that helped him in his campaign, sources say.

One of Cornejo's two assistants is Nereyda Arredondo, who was earning $28,000 at the district clerk's office and who now works at the sheriff's department. Garza removed two veteran patrol lieutenants from their offices to give Arredondo, who helped him financially in his campaign. She is listed in campaign reports as having donated $2,250.
Arredondo now works at the sheriff's department. Her $2,250 donation was almost 10 percent of her salary then. She is now making $30,949 as an office specialist at the department.

At the time many speculayed that she - like two or three other low-plow-paid district clerk employees who donated thousands -were merely "prestanombres" to cover large donors.

Garza removed the two veteran patrol lieutenants from their offices to give Arredondo and another clerk the space. Is it good policy to embarrass patrol supervisors by removing them from their offices to please his campaign contributors?

Then there is the spending thousands of dollars to paint all the patrol units and changing all the uniforms of department deputies to erase the Lucio presence rather than asking giving a deserved pay raise for them and the jailers?

Just four months into his four-year term and things do not bode well for the folks out at Rucker-Carrizales. How many more lawsuits are lurking out here with this scorched earth administrative policy?

No news there. Always happens.

Locally, state and national. All those ambassadors? Big cash contributors!

You must have something against Eric Garza, Montoya.

And it's killing you.

Lucio changed uniforms, unit colors and employees all the time. What's the difference? Everyone knows that occurred among many harassment issues committed by The Reynas and favorite emoyees. Too many inaccuracies.

So Cornejo now makes almost 50k and the deputy starts at 35k... The Change we need!

Give the guy a chance, Montoya.

The people spoke, ese.

Your anecdotal stuff on Nereyda Arredondo is weak. She's only making $2,000 more, hardly a windfall.

Didn't Rosenbaum hire you cause you helped him?

Let's not be L7....

Are these so called specialist clerk his, "amigos in crime", that covered up so called technical errors, while Eric was dismissing crimes against criminals in return for forfeiture monies? Life is a bitch Eric.

If the moral at the Department was low already ,, it’s even worse now ... I totally regret voting and having my family vote for Eric . If I knew it was about donating to his campaign I would’ve pulled out a loan .. How much for a position?$ .. seems like this is all about focusing on dooming everyone who worked for Sheriff Lucio instead of giving us some incentives

Nereyda looks hot. Phone number?

-Look at Lucio's old campaign photos. Most of those involved in block walking were receiving extra pay from the forfeiture fund. One of them had no rank but was getting paid more than a Lt.
-Lucio's secretary made more than $50,000.
-Rodriguez is about as useful as a dull rock.
-Del Bosque 2024!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing on what contributor Mark Johnson got out of this?

There goes your knee-jerk theory, Montoya.

Why is it that deputies are doing security for Osiel Cardenas jr at el Centenario.... Conrado Cantu is back

Anonymous said...

So now that Luis Mendieta so called resigned from the Sheriff Office. So we know that he worked under the Lucio Adm., resigned and got on the bandwagon to support Eric Garza. Now he is long gone....Why?? is the million dollar question?
Did they realized that he was a liability?
Or is it for the so called fundraiserss that were being held a Rancho; while you have our Deputies providing security and you have off duty deputies drinking up with a very know drug cartel Osiel Cardenas Jr. ????
Is Mendieta on the cartel's payroll now?
Will Garza and Gracia start to panic...Mendieta knows a little to much. The so called SO Empire will start to crumble within!

What a JOKE of a department.

Greenspan ( Blessed Memory ) was the spiritual advisor of the past administration. His passing left a void that would never be filled, hence the deteriorating dead fish from the head down. Other volunteers at the jail serve selfishly with no recognition for their time in service. Many, with over 20, 30, years of service.

Many employees gave just as many years of service without any recognition from the Commission Court. Yet, if your in the clique, you get a plaque and a ceremony with photos al a..... county judge, wake up! Unless you have other political plans. Many people are leaving with a bad taste in the mouths.

Deputies and jailers should be making a minimum of 70k a year. That’s the national average for a county our size.

Take a que from Biden and go big, fix it now,

Make it right......right now....

Biddings for county positions will take place in front of the court house on Harrison St. on Sunday morning after church service bring your centavitos gueyes. Bidding for director's positions will take place at the oyster bar after a couple of highballs.

@ 12:12am yes, many have served a long time jailers and deputies need to get paid more and only favorites recognized under the Lucio Administrators. Including the favorites getting paid more than others. That went on for too long. Current employees leaving must be the ones that were favored by the previous administration and catered to in all aspects without much work ethics. Some must remain trying to create conflict and discort in an attempt to conquer maliciously.

The new Michel de Nostredame del valle a seer wrote in his "Les Prophéties", a collections of poetic quatrains predicting that cameron county will be consumed with 100's of lawsuits in future events coming from abuses by a law department. n'importe quel pari?

IS THIS THE fifth LAWSUIT? MORE COMING!
