Former BISD Board of Trustees Vice President Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson is appealing her conviction on bribery charges.
Attorney’s representing Atkinson filed the notice of appeal on Wednesday with U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr.’s court.
(Court observers say that if Atkinson and her attorneys were hoping this would allow her to remain free pending a decision by the court, with less than a two days she reports to federal prison there is simply no time for a court to decide on a stay of sentencing.)
Atkinson is scheduled surrender herself to U.S. Marshals on Friday.
The eight counts of bribery Atkinson was found guilty of are in connection with a movie project that was in the exploratory stages in February 2019 when she was vice president of the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees.
The case began that December when a federal grand jury indicted her on bribery charges surrounding the purported movie project and a Feb. 12, 2019 board meeting.
She remains free on a $50,000 bond.

she is scared to go to jail, when she would be glowing when people would lose their jobs and buiness and homes. If she expects sympathy from the people and the court, she and her family should have been honest and stopped all the stealing. She could easily get out if she turns on everyone that allowed her to climb the pole of power. There is still people waiting to be indicted.

There is only one judge in the universe and it's not you. I'm sure your family is not perfect either. So have a little empathy and don't point the finger and you will be a better person.

She shoulda stayed truthful and legal. Heck, she had a damn 200k yearly salary..just do your job woman.. don't be corrupt. I would never understand this people that command 200k plus yearly salaries and accept bribes in the amount of 5k or less.. when caught, they throw their whole life away...shit, I have a 40k job and I am happy knowing I am doing my job and I am staying with the law.

Everyone deserves prayers for consequences of their dire desire for power, influence and money. You stepped on a lot of people to get where you are at today. You are not well regarded because how you treated people, not because of what you did with money. If you would have pursued the money and treated people well, you might have gotten away with all. My family hates you and wishes the worst for you because of what you did to me and to several of my colleagues. When you sent me to wait for you for hours and hours, you were torturing me and that is exactly what you wanted. You wanted me to break and kiss your feet. When you publicly chewed me out in front of my peers, you failed miserably and look where you are at, you failed miserably.
