ATKINSON AT BRYAN, TEXAS FPC; RELEASE DATE: 02-20-2027

(Ed.'s Note: It took a while, but Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson has finally arrived at her first Bureau of Federal Prisons site called the Bryan Federal Prison Camp where she will begin to serve her 80-month sentence.

This should put a damper on rumors swirling locally that she had been released and allowed to remain free pending an appeal.

In November, 2020 a federal jury found Atkinson guilty on eight counts of bribery. 

Atkinson was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in December 2019 after being indicted by a grand jury.

According to the indictment, Atkinson used her position as a Brownsville ISD employee to, “obtain money from private companies and private individuals in exchange for assistance in obtaining contracts with BISD or Rio Hondo ISD.”

Atkinson was convicted of with counts of bribery. U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez also ruled that Atkinson should not hold public office again. Her release date is listed as February 20, 2027.

Bryan FPC is located in Brazos County and holds 463 female inmates.
