AZTECA-VALLE'S LERMA: IN THE TAMAULIPAS KILLING FIELDS

(Ed.'s Note: Where does your intrepid investigative reporter do when he asks for a few days vacation? Would you believe accompany a German journalistic film crew and the Mexican and Tamaulipas military searching for missing migrants in the wastes of north Tamaulipas? Lerma's contacts with Mexico's Comision Nacional De Busqueda De Personas Extraviadas (National Commission to Search For Missing Persons) allowed him to tag along with a military unit on their search for clandestine graves in the parched north Tamaulipas wastelands.

Lerma, an investigative reporter for Azteca-Valle KRGV 5 (5.2), and the two-person film crew lived with the military unit which  as can be seen – were loaded for bear and they were also outfitted with bullet-proof vests for two days. The unit patrolled the area around Nuevo Laredo, Miguel Aleman and Reynosa, the cartel triangle of death.

Lerma reports on his Facebook page that the unit came across several places where they found human remains and those places were marked and reported to the Commission to perform forensic investigations and attempt to identify them and match them with missing persons from northern Mexico and Central America.

In the two days that the film crew was in Mexico with the unit, there were no confrontations with cartel gunmen, but on the day they departed for Texas, the unit came under attack by cartel operatives trying to keep them from exploring and further revealing the location of the grave sites.
