DID BOCA CHICA LOSE AN ENGINE MANUFACTURING PLANT?

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Just what did SpaceX rocket mogul Elon Musk mean when he said tat the "challenges of operating" at Starbase at Boca Chica left them "no choice" but to put engine production at McGregor, Texas?

Was it environmental concerns raised by local activists? Or was it complaints by U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department over the disturbance of endangered birds and animals out in the mud flats off Boca Chica?

Or was it Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz's warnings about closing county roads and using unlicensed security officers?

Environmentalists from Brownsville to Washington D.C. have been protesting his ambitious vision to build, test and launch next-generation rockets in this fragile ecosystem including engine manufacturing.

"It's 24/7. The lights are really bright out here at night. It's just constant sound and presence of people," says Stephanie Bilodeau, a conservation bird biologist with the non-profit Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program. "I wouldn't want to be nesting near any of this if I were a bird."

Or perhaps it was retirees at Kopernick Shores protesting Musk's takeover of their village.

Whatever the reason, it means that SpaceX's construction of "roughly 800 to 1,000" engines per year will not take place at Starbase (Boca Chica), but will now be manufactured at McGregor. Or was it just a Musk bluff to pressure local residents and authorities to lighten up?

NPR reported that Starbase employs nearly 1,700 people with a payroll of over $80 million. For a historically poor county where the best and brightest often felt they had to leave the Rio Grande Valley, SpaceX has been a godsend. Musk – believed to be the world's richest person – has been generous when the moment called for it. Within minutes of the Starship 11 explosion – with rocket parts still smoldering on the landscape—he tweeted that he was donating $30 million to Cameron County and the City of Brownsville for schools and downtown revitalization.

Zeke Silva in the posts above stated that " it looks we lost a HUGE OPPORTUNITY. In less than 3 hours his mind was changed and we lost to McGregor. I hope I’m reading this wrong but I don’t think so."

Although Musk did not elaborate on the "challenges" SpaceX faced to establish the manufacturing plant here, it does appear that a huge labor-intensive opportunity flew into Central Texas instaed of hiring workers here.

Until we get a further clarification, we may never know.

McGregor is between Austin and Dallas, just south of Waco. Closer to the sort of workforce Musk wants and needs - not pachucos or men used to food stamps.

The news of the new Musk plant in McGregor was in the Waco, Dallas & Austin newspapers yesterday and the story has generated lots of interest for job seekers affected by the Covid. According to the reports, this will be the second plant in the area (near Waco) which will create some 800-1000 new jobs. The first plant currently has 500 employees. The entire county and surrounding areas reached out with more incentives and services to assure Musk that they were grateful that he thought enough of their support to consider more expansion. Musk is quoted as saying that he picked Macgregor because of "challenges" at the South Texas (Boca Chica) site. I think that one of the challenges he observed was that he was getting more obstacles than support from our local county, city and other officials. I feel that our local officials acted like they were doing Musk a favor for letting him build here. McGregor's gain is a big loss for our county.

Just move the whole fucking shit there. I am sick of SpaceX assholes around here.

Luis Saenz behavior should be investigated by the Department of Justice. How the hell did his wife get appointed to TSC? Why do the need so much control? I hope Musk reports these anomalies.

Keep it up idiots…. keep complaining, and this gift horse will walk right out of Cameron County

Pinche Musk should just move all his shit overthere! Anyways, Podcast host Joe Rogan has slammed Joe Biden describing the president as being 'out of his mind.'
On his episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan described the current period of time as formative in the history of the United States, and claimed history would not be kind to the Biden's presidency.
'In the future, they're gonna be saying it's one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of the country,' Rogan said.
'We don't really have a real leader in this country anymore,' Rogan continued. 'I mean, you could say Joe Biden is the president, he's our leader, and you'd be correct on paper, but everybody knows he's out of his mind. He's barely hanging in there.'
'He is not a real leader. Everybody knows he's out of his mind,' Rogan said
Rogan's guest, comedian Iliza Shlesinger, agreed, 'Everyone knows he's out of his mind,' with Rogan adding that Americans are unhinged because, 'we're not anchored down by a real leader.'
I told all you Biden's wrinkle ass kissers that we have a vegetable as president! He's nothing without his note cards! Hahahahahahahaha!

Luis Saenz's wife, elected by the people this last go round, was nominated by Tony Zavaleta as replacement for Trey Mendez after he became mayor. I'm okay with the nomination except that no one else was nominated (considered) and that is not right. Tony Zavaleta needs a new lesson on civics, the kind you can be proud of and not have to defend.

Tony Z knew better but went ahead with his silliness.

That horse has just left the barn.
Now LULAC will scream and raise hell to no avail and Cameron Couty has scared of another industry.

But hey: it's what you do.

Before looking for scapegoats to blame - environmentalists, locals, beach users etc - how ‘bout supply chain, transportation, and 300 miles south of major population concentrations? Logistics! By the way, is there any running freshwater supply yet at Stargate City or whatever? When one is dealing with explosives, a freshwater source is indispensable. Also - geology. There is no solid bedrock base in the launch area - well, maybe under 10,000 ft of silt and clay. There is a very unstable base - look what happened in Surfside, Fl with salt-water intrusion and a barrier island.

Everybody knows what's wrong with Brownsville. No news there. It is known across Texas and elsewhere in the RGV that Brownsville's citizenry is lazy, unmotivated, cared for by the government and generally slow to learn.

That includes the mostly heavyset White population.

Elon Musk did not need a consultant to tell him there was NO ONE in Brownsville qualified to help his projects. That laughter you hear coming to town from the west - Harlingen and McAllen.

Brownsville needs a serious deportation plan and an influx of new people.

Until that happens, it will continue to be humiliated by what Elon Musk just did in McGregor. Not happening, but good luck to the city that always sleeps.

Get Space X out of the Boca Chica, their operations is nothing but a testing site for their rockets (Guinea pigs). Brownsville will never see a live launch to space from Boca Chica as they dont have the infrastructure to conduct such launches. Future space launches will always take place out of Florida as it has always been.

Not complicated--- where is there room to build a factory out there without filling in wetlands (which he wants to do)?

@4:28 But we were told otherwise by our ex-mayor Tony Martinez on CNN and Judge Cascos! Hahahahaha!

Bloggers should just write their own comments like Duardo, the Irrelevant Impotent, used to do on his many failed blogs.

We’ve had our 15 minutes of fame. SpaceX go away. Remember when the Donald wanted the beauty pageants at SPI and was gonna bring casino gambling on the island; a la Atlantic City? Never happened. Our natural resources and eco-tourism is our only draw. We can sell out to big oil, LNG, etc, and enrich our local political characters for short term gain at the expense of forfeiting our grandchildren’s experience of a pristine beach.

The RGV as been exploited by carpetbaggers for far too long. We have so many sportsman’s here that need to step up and not let our heritage and our lands get sold off for a quick profit. I believe now Is the time to take a stand and say no more…..we will not sell out our heritage and way of life to corporate interests that want to exploit our resources.
