Has it finally happened?
A flurry of rumors that the U.S. Marshal's Office had removed their federal prisoners from the Cameron County detention center- initially confirmed by some county officials - is now a rumor again.
As they told it, the scuttlebutt was that the marshals had come in late last night and/or early this morning and taken custody of an unknown number of prisoners.
If a county allows a detention center to be vacated, they say, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards will shut the facility down and it would be difficult to reopen it.
Cameron County's general fund lists an amount of approximately $2.3 million that the county receives from the federal government.
"This is not good if it's true," said a county elected official. "If it's not one thing with the sheriff's office it's another. Not good."
The Marshal's Office has complained to the sheriff's department that they were not pleased that on several occasions federal inmates taken to medical appointments only had one sheriff's dept. deputy accompanying them as guard. Under the contract with the feds, county officials say, they are guaranteed that they be in the custody of at least two guards.
And despite a massive mail out to sent to county homes to recruit jailers, the jailer staff is some 50 personnel short, commissioners say.
Recently, a federal inmate (said to be a Puerto Rican hitman) managed to escape his lone deputy guard from the county annex in Harlingen and was on the run until marshals learned of his escape and managed to recapture him.
The marshal's office did not return calls and the county judge's office issued a denial on the account. But with so much smoke, could there really be a fire?

So the Sheriff Eric Garza Circus along with his Puppet master Robert Gracia have and will continue to be a liability to the county.
Now the well deserve pay increases that Deputy's, Dispatchers and Jailers you can KISS that good bye!
What a mess that these so called leaders have created. You were way over your head when you took office. You ran your campaign on the image that you could make it better at the Jail. That the previous administration was doing things WRONG. Well guess WHAT???
If you look back into history of the Lucio Administration or Conrado they never ever had these Jail issues with Texas Commission On Jail Standards of closing them down.
I think its the best Interest of the Cameron County Citizens to demand that Sheriff Eric Garza Resign from his Post Immediately along with Stutter man..... Robert Gracia...
Un pendejo guiando a otro mas pendejo. Gracia-Garza
I believe this happens from time to time. Look into it a little deeper. It may not be the gloom & doom you offer.

I think that jailer staffing shortage is endemic in counties that pay peanuts to their employees, hence the problems meeting TCJS staffing ratios. The Cameron County Jail System has everything in place to make it attractive to house inmates to the USMS, Hidalgo County, BOP, etc….Proximity to medical facilities, maximum security cell placement, the county’s willingness to upgrade and improve according to the latest best practices, and prime location to both State and Federal Hall of Justice locations, make it easily accessible to lawyer’s that need convenient access to their clients.
Moving Inmates ninety miles away from initial jurisdiction places a strain on the process and isn’t fair to everyone involved.
Cameron County Commissioners’ Court need to face the facts that have been presented to them for many years, that regardless of what Sheriff’s administration is in place, the jail is their biggest liability and that staffing and paying a competitive salary is paramount in creating a safe jail climate and an environment where employees; feel safe, competitively compensated, and have upward mobility.
Commissioners’ Court, take a cue from the present administration in DC and go big! 3.5 billion infrastructure bill….. no problem.
PAY YOUR JAILERS the same wages as the JAILERS ARE PAID IN DC.

THE FIRST THING THE SHERIFF SHOULD DO IS GET RID OF THE CHIEF DEPUTY WHO HAS NO EXPERIENCE AS AN ADMINSTRATOR FOR ANY LE/POLICE AGANCIES AND IS AN IDIOT!!!! DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CITIZENS OF THE COUNTY AND FOR YOUR DEPARTMENT BEFORE YOUR DOOMEDDDDDDD SHERIFF!!!!!!! HIRE SOMEONE ELSE WITH MUCH MORE EXPERIENCE THAN YOU AND YOUR CHIEF DEPUTY IF YOU WANT TO GET YOUR DEPARTMENT OUT OF THE SHIT HOLE YOU DUG!!!!!!!!! IF YOU DON'T WHILE YOUR TERM IS EARLY....YOU WILL LOSS THE NEXT ELECTION!!!!!! I DON'T CARE HOW MUCH MONEY YOU PUT TOGETHER FOR YOUR RE-ELECTION.... VOTERS ARE VOTERS AND WILL REMEMBER ALL OF THIS MAYHAM YOU HAVE CAUSE UNDER YOUR WATCH...GOOD LUCK SHERIFF WE PRAY THAT YOU TAKE ACTION AND BRING YOUR DEPARTMENT BACK IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR THE STAKE OF THE COUNTY CITIZENS!!!!!!!
I THINK THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THE JAIL ISSUE IS TO PRIVATEIZE THE JAIL SYSTEM AND LET AN OUTSIDE COMPANY HANDLE ALL OF THE JAIL MATTERS!!!!! MIGHT BE CHEAPER ON THE LONG RUN?????????
Garza get rid of Gracia and Rodriguez' retarded ass....then.. maybe we can call you Sheriff
Take a much needed step back and look closely at the picture you see. It's time to make a change to secure a shot at re-election.
Dump the dead weight that is sinking you.
If there is a shortage of jailers? Then you can bet that the Marshal Service will take their prisoners to avoid possible liable issues or escapes! That will cost the county and the fault will be the inexperienced new sheriff and his tyrant, gracia! Montoya, its as simple as a public information request? There is nothing to hide other than the truth! Or, attend a commissioner meeting and ask at public speaking? The new sheriff attends those, doesn't he?
But then again, this is corrupted cameron county!
