Well, the shoe is on the other foot now.
We've heard about his chief deputy Gracia's antics even before he was a county employee, his lack of TCOLE certification, jail troubles, riots, etc., And they complained that some judges had released them after they found out they were sheriff department employees.
Now one of his dispatchers – 43-year-old Melissa Abrego of San Benito – was arrested for DWI by the Laguna Vista Police Dept. at about 12:27 a.m. Monday on Highway 100 and booked for the offense.
Well, guess what? It seems like Sheriff Garza himself called and interceded on her behalf and convinced municipal judge Benny Ochoa III to allow her o be released on personal recognizance. Abrego was then released from custody and drove home to San Bene.
No favoritism, compadrismo here, hey? Or as Garza's supporters used to say, Everyone should be treated the same, not just because they are employees of the sheriff's department.
How much things change (the change we need?) and yet remain the same.

This was very much a conflict of interest on the new sheriff. What kind of message is he sending by intervening in a legal arrest? What favors has Melissa done or will do with him sticking his nose where it don't belong? Was she suspended with pay or without out? Was she terminated? Huh, in his demand respect speech and obey my orders from gracia? Melissa' actions went against gracia' demand for loyalty and should be terminated? Oh, it cameron county politics at its best! And nothing has changed for sure!
