Lucio III, who left with other Democrats of the Texas House to Washington D.C. to prevent a quorum to prevent Texas Republicans from approving a far-right agenda in the first special session, is back in Texas and attending the session.
It was his father who voted with the Republicans to take control of the legislature by casting the deciding vote on doing away with the "gentlemen's agreement" to allow Democrat participation in the Senate. That was the the two-thirds rule that gave Democrats in the senate a tool to blunt the GOP excesses. Now they don't have to count on two thirds of the senate, which would have included Democrats.
Lucio Jr. has always sought refuge in religion, proselytize about women's reproductive rights being in violation of God's law, voted with Republicans against worker compensation benefits, went along with doctors and corporations to fight for "tort reform" laws, and continues to rake in the bucks as a "consultant" to local governmental entities on behalf of the highest bidder.
The Texas Freedom Network (TFN) and Planned Parenthood Texas Votes (PPTV), leveled all the criticisms Lucio has faced for years. In his three-decade legislative career, the literature noted, the state senator has joined Republicans to support measures including school vouchers, bathroom restrictions for transgender Texans, and abortion rollbacks.
Now, while his fellow Democrats like Alex Dominguez from Brownsville and Gina Hinojosa from Austin continue to fight Abbott's thinly-disguised right-wing Trumpist agenda and restrictive voting measures, Eddie III is back in the Abbott fold to open the door to limit minority voting rights.
