IN DEFENSE OF D'TOWN BROWNSVILLE, ICE CREAM AND WALKING

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Funny how we all complain about downtown parking, homeless, the Matamoros people (not now because of the pandemic), if you are over 50, downtown didn't have parking, we still parked, we WALKED, we paid the parking meter, we took the bus.

We complain about over priced ice cream or "Paletas", but the popcorn factory at the mall charges $6 for a small popcorn that you can buy for $1 at the dollar tree (and it has better taste), go to the Mexican restaurant Arandas on Washington EVERY MORNING and you will find that BOTH SIDES OF THE STREET are full with cars that PAY the parking meters to have their breakfast at that restaurant or at the 9-11 cafe.

Back in the day, Neisners (El Gran Mercado) had a store with a food fountain, Kress and Woolworth had food fountains, even Walgreens (corner where payless was) had a food fountain and YES, you had to pay parking meters.

Get out of the RGV and paying a quarter for a parking meter is NOTHING compared to what other cities charge and no, there is no free parking downtown. You want to hate the mayor, I agree with you, he has not done a good job, but insulting him will not get the job done.

If you think you can do better, instead of insults, do a run for his position and show the citizens what YOU are capable of doing. The ice cream place is at a good location. Back in the day, it used to be one of the best florist shops in Cameron County.

Right next to the church, young people running the place. Don't knock it before trying it. If you think our city is a dump, please drive up north, you will not be missed.

You forgot to mention that the mayors at that time DID NOT HAVE EXCEPTIONS OR EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FROM PARKING METERS like NOW! and as far as taste we are ALL different regardless of the cost, and as far as I can remember there has always been parking meters in all of downtown with no exception for ANYBODY not even the handicapped!

Vote for or try to re-elect the present alcalde and continue to see the corruption in front of your eyes, you forgot to mention the queen theater, they also served refreshments...

You should have picked an alley to open up your
Refreshment Shop

I see nothing FUNNY about anybody complaining it improves the situations that need improvements, nothing funny about that...

What about free parking? This is still Brownsville, not Austin. Stop trying to glorify the past by comparing it to the present. Downtown Brownsville was and still is a dump and has been for decades, DECADES. Yeah, I'd run for a non-paying public office if I had $200K to blow. Have to recoup that investment somehow, but selling out my community to some puppeteer foreigner is beyond the boundaries of what I would do for the love money. I have scruples. The "what's in it for me" has always been a major part of the Brownsville political scene. We all were duped back in 2019 when we voted for mayor, but come to think of it, the alternatives would not have been any different. I remember two other individuals who tried to scam the community in the not too distant past with their own personal agenda and all in under the cover of "public service", but the truth came out which led the end of their delusions of grandeur. Change is inevitable, I realize that, but I look at what is happening around us and I want to puke. Maybe I should walk down memory lane to DenRuss pharmacy and buy some PeptoBismol to help me swallow the farce of "progress and innovation" being forced down our throats.

8:53 you are wrong on this part. "all of downtown with no exception for ANYBODY not even the handicapped!" Anyone with disabled plates nowhere in Texas has to pay for a parking meter. Also the airport parking is free per state law.

"If you think our city is a dump"
We don't think it's a dump. We are just tired of it being run by corrupt elites for new professional elites. You could say let them have their cute downtown so they can feel like they are having authentic experiences, but putting the focus there means the real city, and the real people, are being neglected.

Back in the late 50's?? The disabled logo wasn't even drawn yet.The first version of the Americans with Disabilities Act was introduced to Congress in 1988.

Go vote and get these self-serving pendejos out once and for all, and remove those blue bags hiding the parking meters. BOLA DE MAMONES.

It is not an insult, it is the truth. Brownsville downtown is a dump. North Brownsville is where you want to be in business. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

After the florists closed due to lack of business. It was a whorehouse.
