MAKING ROOM FOR RENE DE COSS'S SECRETARIES...

 Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Believe it or not, the dominoes have begun to fall as new City of Brownsville presiding municipal judge Rene De Coss takes over that court.

The first to fall under the onslaught triggered by City of Brownsville City Manager Noel Bernal's has been Municipal Court Coordinator Mike Sanchez, a veteran public servant whose track record from Judge Art McDonald at Cameron County County-Court-at-Law # 1 propelled him to the city position.

Using a true-and-tried method of utilizing blase certification test results as a gauge of proficiency and efficiency in public service as a justification for employment, Bernal has eased out Sanchez, whose track record as a court coordinator is unmatched locally. Instead of judging an employee's proven record, Bernal is now using a passing grade in a certification class to remove obstacles before this path to align his pieces toward total control.

Sanchez epitomized crisp professionalism laced with a rare human touch of empathy for the citizens of this city. Unlike Bernal's automatons, he knew that behind the case numbers and court dockets, his clients were human beings vis-a-vis the power of the state. He was a people person and he will be missed.

Funny how this comes as city commissioners have put the proposed budget for that court under a magnifying glass as the process continues pending the next city meeting September 21. Besides the court, commissioner Roy de los Santos, has set his sights on the machinations behind the municipal court, the Public Library and the city's Information and Marketing departments.

De los Santos has stated that their budget requests will be funded depending on them being more forthcoming with answers to the city commissioners' questions. When he moved to table the approval of the 2021-2022 city budget, he said the departments' staffs had not been completely forthcoming on his questions related to budget deliberations.

Although Mayor Trey Mendez said he was ready to vote on the budget approval, commissioner Rose Gowen withdrew her motion to approve to allow De los Santos to gather his information from the departments before he voted on the items.

Now, pending the September 21 meeting, Bernal and De Coss's moves to make room for the new judge's underlings has resulted in a career public servant removed to make room for their hires. But as Bernal makes his moves for total control, it has highlighted and magnified the scrutiny of that department by the city commission.

Will the commissioners continue to allow this city manager to wreak havoc among the rank and file as he lines up his chess pieces and removes local people who have shown their competence and abilities to serve the public for his hand-picked cadre of yes-man and women?

So who's next on the Bernal chopping block?

Who is responsible for hiring Bernal?

I wonder who the fool is that wrote this piece? He seems to expect merit to have weight down here in Browntown. It isn't merit fool, it is palanca! That is the way we roll.

Madre de Dios!

El Paya Jerry McHale has Jim "Manteca" Barton running for a Port of Brownsville seat. Barton is the least educated blogger, with no college degree. And did he even finish high school?! GED?

Pos el vato no quiere decir, Apa.

I don't know Mr Sanchez personally but have delt with him on a few occasions. I can yell you that he is a true professional and an asset to the city of Brownsville.

So let me get this right, Bernal is using a certification process to evaluate employee's performance? If so, why is it that he hired the HR director and also the Assistant HR director both with zero HR experience or even any knowledge of employment laws and regulations? The only logical answer is that Bernal knew them or are family related. The city Commission should look into this matter as Human Resources is critical and subject to State and Federal compliance issues.

Asshole Bernal, in another shameless act of self promotion and self aggrandizement, sent out to all city employees a POSTCARD, open to all, announcing that the City Commission has authorized a $1,500 stipend to each employee of the City. He signs it, “Yours in leadership and service”. So much for personnel and employee compensation matters being confidential. He couldn’t resist the self promotion. How much did these postcards cost the City? Is it legal to publicly announce a stipend in a postcard - for all to read the name of the recipient and the amount being paid to the employee. What an idiot!

I’m sorry but this is a lie. He mistreated all the employees and this was just an excuse to give him the boot. He was not a people person and didn’t care of anyone but himself. Loved to gossip and create rumors. He won’t be missed by anyone.

Bernal is a POS. Firing someone by handing them a letter and not being a man about it face to face. Sanchez will be missed. It’s a shame that Bernal and De Coss are trying to control everything by hiring people with no experience and people who they have in their circle.

we all have skeletons...and this won't end well for anyone.

The City manager should be in control...and if he is doing a bad job, then the commission can fire him. That simple. But you can't fire him if you don't let him do his job.

But as long as officials are elected there will always be a "side story."

Lawyer here with 25+ years of practice. I haven't had a municipal court case in quite some time so I'm not currently familiar with the municipal court environment. However, I have worked with Mike Sanchez on hundreds and hundreds of cases when he coordinated the Cameron County Court at Law for Judge McDonald. Mr. Sanchez is and has always been the quintessential professional. Losing him is a MAJOR loss for the city. This should not have happened. Never. He won't last long on the job market. Guys with his superior skill set usually find work quickly.

The jealous dawg barking at McHale and Barton is McAllen's infamous failing, falling, flailing blogger Dwardo Paws Martinez. "Woof woof woof woof woof woof" goes the hound after his 11th failed blog. "But, I'm a jurnalist!" the dawg barks, waiting for Brownsville to throw him a bone. Brownsville puts him on "ignore" for the 11th time. "Go find your own bone in McAllen," says the RGV's crown jewel. "We feed our own needy ones, but we are not responsible for the homeless in other dusty valley towns."

Nothing but double standards in the COB. Dosen't the city manager ever notice his immediate staff directly under him for performance issues? Like the director of "Government affairs" that dont do anything all day, classified as a director but doesn't manage employees or budget? That's unheard of, a prime example of is not what you know but who you know. Very pathetic leadership.

De Coss is Bernal’s new bitch. De Coss is beholden to Bernal for his new position as presiding Municipal Court judge. Neither one caring that they ousted Bobby Lerma, who was doing a spectacular job, for no good reason at all. Then, De Coss fired Judge Lerma’s assistant, Mike Sanchez, just because he was Bobby’s hire. All this just to have Bernal hand-pick his homey, Victor Flores, as Bernal’s yes-man as the new City Manager. The deck is being stacked while the City Commissioners are sleeping. WAKE UP!!!

Mike Sanchez is a great man. His Dad, Mike Sanchez Sr. is a great man. They have given years of service to this City. God Bless them and if I could, I would hire Mike in any capacity, or any position , cause he's just that good for the people.

End result of "Total Alignment " I mean, total bullshit.

Anonymous said...

This guy just wants everyone to pay his friends and his projects.

It's not why are you hiring and paying "those people'...it's why aren't you hiring MY people.

I hope I'm wrong.

Only the bad attorneys become judges why? Son una bola de idiotas can't make it on their own so they look for a chiche job. Remember limas "WHEN I PUT ON MY ROBE I FEEL LIKE GOD". All judges here in the RGV feel the same way as Limas.

we all know where Mr Sanchez’s salary is going… straight into De Coss’ and his secretaries pockets… total bullshit. What a loss for COB Sanchez was devoted to taking care of the citizens..

This city manager doesn’t care about the city employees or the citizens of Brownsville! He is just robbing our city blind and not one commissioner is doing anything about it! Soon enough the city won’t have any employees because of his lack of leadership and lies!
Imagine working for 25 + years and then ready to retire this clown takes away the benefits . He and all the people he has brought in are getting rich off our taxpayer money. Get rid of him before he leaves our city broke !

Almost all directors are from out town, most making well over $100k a year. Its crystal clear that the CM knew most of the new directors beforehand. Some directors even with Mexican college degrees, before Bernal, the city never recognized Mexican college degrees for employment purposes. Currently, the city has maintenance workers and bus drivers who have been employed for many years with Mexican college degrees but never offered them director positions not even supervisory positions. Total Alignment? What a double standard.

Hopefully they clean up City Secretary Office next. All the ladies in that office are lazy and always in a bad mood.
