“BUTTERFLIES AND ZEBRAS, AND MOONBEAMS AND FAIRY TALES.THAT'S ALL SHE THINKS ABOUT. RIDING WITH THE WIND." LITTTLE WING LYRICS BY JIMI HENDRIX

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Surrounded by 1850s-early 1900s circa buildings in front of it (Steadman building) and on all its sides, this psychedelic mural that harks back to the late LSD-dropping 1960s or early 1970's jars the senses. Butterflies, humming birds, eyes peering out from the center of flowers, and trippy figures surely convey a sense of downtown Brownsville. Or does it?

Mexican City artist Sofia Castaneda – who'll pocket a cool $20,000 like Los Angeles muralist Ted Kelly – said her murals "brought people together."

Not this one – or come to think of, neither did Kelly's.

Those of us who survived the 70s when Purple Haze, Orange Sunshine and Blotter acid were popped like aspirins with a decidedly out-of-this-world effect might experience flashbacks upon seeing the finished product.

But it won't trigger flashbacks of the conjuntos, Charro Days, the Mexican Revolution next door that spilled into Brownsville, the beginning of the Chisholm Trail, Fort Brown, or the cattle and horses of the border's Mexican-American and Anglo agrarian and ranch culture and economy upon which local history is based.

Nowhere. They don't know us or the border culture. How can they?

This pseudo psychobabble can't hide the utter disconnect between these images of us by outsiders like the artists from L.A. and Mexico D.F. Up to now, Mayor Juan "Trey" Mendez hasn't said who decided on these modern deco and geometric-psycho  murals to grace the walls of buildings in the historical district. Was it former Community and Government Affairs director Ramiro Gonzalez and their sycophants? Or was it just cosmopolitan wannabe Ramiro? You know, Austin-on-the-Rio Grande.

SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk – through his Musk Foundation – plunked down $77,000 to "beautify" downtown Brownsville. Instead, once done here, these artists will – like the monarch butterflies on the latest creation – flit out of town cash in hand.

Come to think of it, that does reflect the nature of this Mendez Administration.

A four-way hit anyone? It'll knock your socks off!

It appears these artists didn’t do their homework when it comes to some historical context these murals should have been based on. Were historical district guidelines followed? Where was the Preservation/Historical/Architectural Committee???? Como siempre, hacen las cosas sin PENSAR! Let’s stop cultural and environmental deprivation in Brownsville which was once considered the “Crown Jewel of the RGV”!!!!!!!!

What’s with all these murals... a waste of tax dollars . There is so much more that we can do to clean up my beloved Brownsville. Murals will fade with time but our city will retain its third world status... we woke up a sleeping giant... the starving painter... he is getting up to 20k to trace n color an image... something that we all did in kindergarten

It is sad when the money leaves brownsville…..but I find it convenient how “some” funds did manage to stay (in the hands of who?)

We voted for a enano clown 🤡. And he hired a circus 🎪 to manage Brownsville. Vote no.

Hideous!!!!! Apparently, Mendez’ administration has no ViSION, culturally speaking.

Hey, not everything in Paris is about France.

Act like you know something, border sophisticates!

Brownsville is about: working class men, hardworking women, kids trying to have a good childhood, crossing to Matamoros, long summer days , old folks, dances, backyard BBQ, etc

Ideas for murals. Ask the citizens of Brownsville what they want to see in the murals.

Fix the: streets, sewer system, flooding problems, clean at lease the main intersections, get the baggers off the streets, clean city palm trees, and keep politicians in check n we can do so much more

McAllen is run by professionals... that’s what we lack here. We have a beautiful city that is craving for a serious makeover... no city in the valley has our landscape uniqueness. But we have a lot of rats ... the human n animal kind that sneak out the door with the dough...Brownsville is a border city that will never change!!! The ghettos of LA are full of murals... is that what we want here?

Oh wow! You people are never happy. It's damn if you do, and damn if you don't. It's art. Just let it be. These artists worked long hours and are proud of their work. I find this very disrespectful for the artists and everyone involved. The only point of this post is to just find something to complain about. What are you going to accomplish? Nothing. So move on and be happy.

It has to do with money.
It has to do with respect.

Paying big money to people that are not from Texas, nor the Valley.

We have many artists here at Brownsville, with no jobs, with no prospects, with no money..... it doesn't hurt to give these artists an opportunity to showcase their talent.

Both artists are from: New York and Mexico City. They have fame and fortune.

Support local talent... Give the murals to high school teachers and their students as their project.

4:11 pm your a good person.
The students and teachers would cherish the moment if given the opportunity. The Murals have nothing to do with Brownsville, poor out of Towner's. City Hall can't see money because they want to steal/spend.

CITY Hall for sale, dumbass.
A mural should be. International bridge, Mexican vaquero at one end, Texas cowboy on the other, seagulls and parrots, river water with Border patrol smuggling drugs and people, and Elon musk rockets blowing up in the background (all 20 of them). And you can't leave out the Zoo. The one thing Brownsville has for family outing. And even then the city does nothing for the zoo. Because the city has no control of the money at the zoo.

Wow, those murals are taking us into the future. Right now we stand to be in the year, 1968. We're moving up. Beam me up Scotty!

FYI...This mural was done by an artist from Mexico in collaboration with three local artists from Brownsville.
