Special to El Rrun-Rrun
The grand opening of Black Bear Diner, a restaurant chain in the Western United States which serves homestyle and "old-fashioned" comfort foods, was held Wednesday at their new Brownsville location at 3867 N. Expressway 77-83. Local management of the restaurant, which features Black Bear decor and has a rustic motif with "over-the-top bear paraphernalia," welcomed Brownsville diners.
Every Black Bear Diner restaurant is decorated with a 12-foot-tall black bear carving by artist Ray Schulz.
Additional murals and artwork are created for each restaurant by Steve and Gary Fitzgerald and Colleen Mitchell-Veyna. The menu format mimics an old newspaper titled The Black Bear Gazette, with articles on the front page. The first restaurant was opened in Mount Shasta, California. in 1995, founded by Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley. The company is based in Redding, California. As of a year ago, Black Bear Diner has 143 locations in 14 states. Brownsville's Diner makes it number 144.
Manager Joe Saenz was welcomed to Brownsville by City Commissioner Roy de Los Santos who thanked the franchise for bringing more than 100 jobs to the city without asking for "incentives" or subsidies from either the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) or the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC).
"It's great to see progress continuing in Brownsville," De los Santos said. "All businesses, new, existing, large and small, are part of our economic development. Black Bear Diner is a welcome addition to the Brownsville family of restaurants. #Buy Brownsville."

Why would they ask for money, mayor of Dirty Tray Mendez pizza took it all.
It may be good while the out of town training staff and managers are in town. Give it 3 months and it will SUCK just like every other restaurant in Browntown. Go to McAllen if you want a decent meal and service.
All the incentives go to the enano and his cronies downtown.
How is the food?
Thats how it supposed to be done, Trey.....
The Valley Millennial/Snowflake Morons will say the bear is racist; should have been a BROWN bear....bawhahahaha! The
Pura pinche rata de dos patas en Brownsville politics
Over price, only the super welfare people and the big rats of Brownsville can eat here. It wouldn't last and that bear will be at the zoo asking for a handouts. Bad service period
5:43 p.m. I found the breakfast to be tasteless. El blancio revuelto esta recosido. Dinner was better. Dessert was great. You are better off going to the W and then taking your "honey" there to get dessert before you get the pound cakes at home.. Make a date night out of it and enjoy the town. Pero hay COVID a si es que quidate and if you are a non vaccer put the pedal to the metal. The Cracker Barrel is better. Brownwville got the second rate version of the Cracker Barrel. The way Logan's is the second rate version of the Texas Road House like that.
I have eaten at Big Bear in California several times. Always had good service and very large portions, although just a little pricey.
But yeah... unless they put a greasy taco of some type on the menu it does not have a chance in money gastronomic taste of of the shithole Brownsville.
