I wonder what their staffing is. How many reporters do they actually have covering Brownsville?
And what experience do they have?
Is it kids just out of journalism school who don't know how the world works, who don't know that the Cameron County District Attorney doesn't go to committee meetings as a rule?
Is it "experienced" reporters who have never been anywhere but the Valley and have no perspective on life, is it people who don't read and so have a limited fund of knowledge?
Or, as I fear, is it just a regional paper with a couple of people in Brownsville writing up feel good stories aimed at not ruffling feathers or affecting commerce?
On any given day most of the stories are Hidalgo County related with a few stories that relate to the lower Valley and Brownsville.
The Brownsville Herald, born on the 4th of July can not be counted on as a guardian of the public, calling out politicians and government entities for questionable acts. They are not what they once were. I wish they would just go ahead and call it a Hidalgo County-centric paper with a lower Valley section and, at least we could quit pretending about that.
(Ed.'s Note: These are points well taken. We might add that management support for its reporting staff has often been lacking when they are ridiculed by elected and city officials as was the case with Nubia Reyna when she was scoffed at by Mayor Trey Mendez and city Information and Marketing hack Felipe Romero, and that reportorial staff salaries often force them out of the profession, as happened with Nubia.)

The Browntown herald has zero experienced reporters. They have 1 or 2 that have been there a while but that does not mean they are experienced. They right 1 fluff story about people they personally know. Especially the one called Nubia. There are zero investigative reporters in the valley. That is one reason the crook politicians get away with everything here. A perfect example is the 3 murders on South Padre Island a couple of months ago. Chanel 5 and others never followed up on the story, no interviews because SPI spends advertising dollars with them. That is why you will never see a story on SPI unless it is to attract more tourist. Shame on the local media. You all are worthless. The good reporters we had years ago have all left for better jobs and a better life.
All I know is that San Benito News along with VMS & Herald have not posted a thing about the CCDA dismissing those aggravated charges on “off & on” father of my children convicted felon, david Hernandez? Are they afraid of that worthless loud mouth in carol sanchez? We know that she interfered or obstructed by keeping her father from testifying. Pretty sad, since the incident took place in front of her children? That the incident was over the convicted felon was intoxicated and wanted to drive. Gossip was that her father’s ears were ringing for a long time? Which only confirmed the allegation that it was close to his head? I wonder what loud mouth would have done if the father of her children had blown his head off? Then to beat all, the worthless loud mouth represents him? Conflict or the fact the SHE was a witness to incident?
Salaries? What do you know about Herald salaries Montoya?

What is the history of newspapers? Do they have rules to follow? What are the rules? How about the privacy of people? How much freedom do the reporters get from their employers? How about fact, opinion, the big picture and the power of the pen....
Do we want to see gossip in the newspaper? Do we want to read the real truth?
