A new and improved Pink Ape old guys softball team emerged victorious Wednesday after an hour-long nail-biter of a victory over first-year team Los Albañiles at the Brownsville Sports Park. The Pink Apes – led by impeccable right-hand pitcher Rodrigo "Deadeye" Moreno, the anchor of the team in the center of photo – befuddled the Albañiles Nine with arching drop balls and a blazing slow pitch that eluded the opponents bats.
Outfielder Cris "Heavy Hitter" Valadez led the team with four hits at four at-bats. The team – after a disappointing season last summer – now seems to be a real contender and could possibly improve over its two-victory record of last summer season.
Aggressive recruiting by the team to replace star second baseman Juan Montoya after his unfortunate career-ending encounter with a chainsaw and a large tree which mangled his throwing hand yielded positive results as former Brownsville City Manager Charlie Cabler and commissioner Pedro Cardenas filled in nicely for the convalescing infielder.
After the resounding victory over the hapless Albañiles, a night of alcohol-fueled debauchery ensued at a local club where Valadez could be heard recounting his stellar performance over and over (and over) again. To join the Pink Ape Fan Club, attend one of their games each Wednesday. Valadez said that the team is hoping the unexpected victory doesn't trigger of rare norther as the season progresses.
