BREAKING NOW: ELIZABETH STREET BARRICADES GONE!

(Ed.s note: It seems like the City of Brownsville Powers-that-be heard the anguished cries of downtown merchants whose businesses were blocked off to vehicle traffic on Elizabeth Street because some bright fella in the city decided to remove the existing lamp posts to make room for new high-tech replacements.

That the maneuver started on Monday and shut off the flow of commerce to downtown's main commercial artery during the last Christmas shopping days didn't please anyone since it denied access to traffic and parking spaces to pedestrian traffic.

Now, apparently, the adult(s?) in the room have stepped in and stopped the madness and we have apologized to Allan Garces after we were told, incorrectly, that he was in charge of the project. It is actually the handywork of Roberto Baez, in charge of Change and Strategy Management whose bright idea it was to start the project during the peak shopping days downtown.

Several merchants downtown looked in in astonishment as their businesses dwindled when customers could not access their stores and eating places.

"We're going to be open just a few days before the holidays and then they shut us off?," asked a lounge owner. "We lost two of the five days we were going to be open before Christmas. It really affected us."

The street is now open and parking available, except for the parking spaces next to the truncated bases of the removed lamp posts.

Hey, sheriff, why not investigate the weird death of attorney Ray Marchan? There has to be a great story in that death dive off the Isabella Causeway.

sho'nuff.

I went downtown on Tuesday @ 7:30 am to Dollar Tree and took Palm Blvd and Elizabeth, to my shock, three blocks were totally closed down. First I thought it was the Christmas parade, then I remembered that it was at the start of the month, then I thought maybe an accident, but didn't see any police cars. WHO is this "brilliant mind" doing those things at this time of the year? What is his annual salary? If they can do that at that time of the morning, why can't they work evening shift instead of heavy holiday traffic days? I turned on the street that took me to St. Charles (is that the one after Levee? then, I turned on Levee to park across from Griselda's on Levee and just walked to Dollar Tree, the post office, and Los Chinitos, who during this tiem open early for the Matamoros crowd. No wonder Mcallen has more $$$$$, visitors and turists; lack of intelligence, brains, opportunists are all over our local government .

Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda Bernal's internal policy of not hiring overtime almost gets one of his patrol Officers seriously injured as he we Severely Beaten and almost shot with his own weapon. As he refuses to allow overtime and putting 6 to 8 Officers per shift out on the street with little to no backup.

Advertisement: Hodge and shergold learn how to spell "firm". You would make a great State senator. Lucio's do not know how to write.

Removing the light posts was a mistake. Those posts were the only thing that made the street semi-beautiful and historical. Para sonos no se estudia.

Another idiotic mistake like the one on Boca Chica Blvd. Stupid minds produce stupid ideas, and this was certainly the stupidest of all.

Will anyone at BPD would have the courage and integrity to investigate why does assistant city manager James Walker drives a city unit (541-9994) on a daily basis but also is receiving a $550 car allowance. This action translate to fraud as the sole reason that a city employee receives a car allowance is for the use of their personal car to conduct city business. This abuser is also using the city's gas pump to fill up this unit and more than likely, takes the unit home. It wouldn't take much to prove the fraud, all it takes a list of city employees who are receiving a car allowance from the finance department and verify that this abuser is in fact using the city unit. He parks on 10th and E. Washington st. City manager Bernal should also be held accountable for allowing this fraud to continue. Come on BP, show us some initiative and take down this abuser.
